University of Queensland Andrew N. Liveris Building | m3architecture

The Andrew N. Liveris Building by Lyons and m3architecture is a striking 11-storey addition to the University of Queensland’s St Lucia campus. The building houses the University's School of Chemical Engineering facilities. 

Lyons and m3architecture recently won the prestigious Queensland Medallion for the Liveris Building at the Australian Institute of Architects’ 2022 Queensland Architecture Awards.

The collaborating practices won a design competition for the new chemical engineering hub with a dynamic proposal.

The exterior of the cube-shaped structure features a cream and fuchsia glass façade broken up by bright green ‘pod’ balconies. Inside, interconnected balconies link student study spaces, while glass-walled laboratories show research-in-progress to curious onlookers. 

A dramatic central atrium highlights the connected and collaborative nature of the School of Chemical Engineering’s activities. The Liveris Academy, a new leadership program supporting outstanding UQ scholars, is housed within the building.

The building was substantially funded by a philanthropic gift by Andrew N. Liveris. Liveris is a businessman, philanthropist, UQ alumnus and the President of the 2032 Brisbane Olympics Committee. Liveris and his wife Paula donated $13.5 million to the University of Queensland to support science leadership.
