Inflatable Wishing Fountain | Bina Baitel Studio

Echoing the current exhibition “Monnaies & Merveilles” (Currencies & Wonders) that presents the rituals of coins throughout the world, Bina Baitel imagined the Inflatable Wishing Fountain.
The Fountain revisits an ancient European ritual that is still very much alive today, and which consists of throwing a coin into a water source to attract good fortune and make wishes come true.
La Monnaie de Paris (The Paris Mint) has given carte blanche to the artist Bina Baitel to create a fountain in the main courtyard of this historical establishment in the center of Paris.
Inspired by the construction principles of urban fountains and inflatable objects, the inflatable fountain questions the collective imagination of architectural and industrial codes.

The architectural language is thus borrowed both from the monumental fountain, a common element of the urban landscape since the Roman Empire, and from the inflatable swimming pool, a familiar object since the middle of the 20th century, resulting from technological progress and the emergence of plastic.

Made up of buoys on top of each other, the inflatable fountain template is deliberately underlined by the silhouette of a classic fountain whose water would gush from a large basin of water.
Instead of a robust and durable structure, a temporary and transportable monument is erected with the help of flexible and light materials. The fountain, a source of water that cannot be dislodged by definition, becomes a mobile and flexible object.

In between an industrial product and a contemplative sculpture, the installation questions the new boundaries between technological evolution and traditional monuments. Bina Baitel merges the industrial universe of inflatable products with the architectural language of urban fountains.
The fountain suggests a dialogue with the Monnaie de Paris and its surroundings, through its appearance that echoes the building’s classical architectural design, as well as through its golden hue, evoking the color of the precious metal, and through its appropriation of the industrial processes familiar to the manufacturer.

La Monnaie de Paris is the oldest of French institutions and one of the oldest enterprises in the world. Its duty is the public service of minting current euros for France and the production of foreign currencies.

Fontaine à vœux Gonflable

La Monnaie de Paris a donné carte blanche à l’artiste Bina Baitel pour imaginer une fontaine dans la Cour d’Honneur de son établissement historique au centre de Paris.

En écho à l’exposition actuelle « Monnaies et Merveilles » qui présente les rituels autour de la monnaie à travers le monde, Bina Baitel a imaginé la Fontaine à vœux gonflable.
La fontaine convoque un rituel occidental encore très ancré dans nos sociétés, qui consiste à jeter une pièce de monnaie dans une source d’eau pour attirer la chance et la fortune.

Inspirée par les principes constructifs des fontaines urbaines et par les objets gonflables, La Fontaine Gonflable s’inscrit dans une réflexion sur la représentation des codes architecturaux et industriels dans l’imaginaire collectif.

Le langage architectural est ainsi emprunté à la fois à la fontaine monumentale, élément commun du paysage urbain depuis l'empire romain, et à la piscine gonflable, objet familier des foyers depuis le milieu du 20ème siècle, issu de l'avancée technologique et de l'émergence du plastique.

Le gabarit, constitué de bouées superposées les unes sur les autres, est volontairement souligné par la silhouette d’une fontaine classique dont l’eau jaillirait d’une vasque rehaussée par son piédestal dans un large bassin d’eau.

En lieu d’un édifice robuste et pérenne, une structure temporaire et transportable est élevée
grâce à une matière flexible et légère. La fontaine, source d’eau indélogeable par définition, devient objet mobile.

Au croisement de l’objet fonctionnel et de la sculpture contemplative, l’installation interroge les nouvelles frontières entre mutation technologique et édifice commun.

La Fontaine à vœux gonflable propose un dialogue avec la Monnaie de Paris, par sa forme tout d’abord, qui renvoie aux codes architecturaux classiques du bâtiment, par sa couleur dorée qui fait écho aux teintes du métal, et par son appropriation des procédés industriels, familiers de la manufacture.

La Monnaie de Paris est la plus ancienne des institutions françaises et l’une des plus vieilles entreprises du monde.
Elle assure la mission de service public de frappe des euros courants pour la France et produit également des devises étrangères.
