The “Solar Pedra da Ilha” hotel is in the state of Santa Catarina, in the city of Penha, in front of Beto Carrero World Theme Park. Through this strategic location, it seeks to meet the tourist demand of the region by offering a timeshare product. In other words, several people buy shares of the same apartment and can use it in alternate periods, with the availability of the already recognized hotel services.
The proposed project seeks its reference in the buildings of modern Brazilian architecture of the 60s and 70s, especially the brutalist architecture of São Paulo city, which shows the construction technology of the building and the use of exposed concrete.
The land on which the project was implemented is just over 6,000 square meters. It has an L shape and is located in front of the SC-414 highway, which connects the city's theme park with the BR-101 highway, one of the most important in the country.
The implementation proposal has divided the land in two parts. The front area which faces the highway was used for the parking area and the other for the construction of the buildings.
For a better organization of the program, two main buildings were built: the ten-story tower, where the 102 departments, reception, administrative and similar are located, and the low-rise block, with only 2 floors, where the social areas are located the restaurant and spaces dedicated to leisure and entertainment.
These two buildings were arranged in an “L” form, which creates an empty space between them. Such a central space has been thought as a large social area, where the swimming pool and outdoor spaces are arranged.
The upper balcony of the social block has cobogó (hollow brick) closures, which besides providing thermal comfort to the rooms, also create different scenarios of light and shadow during the day.
Formally, the project is characterized by an exposed concrete grid, formed by the beams meeting and the pillars, which define the design of the building's facades and seeks as a result an honest work in terms of its parts and materials, without appeals and no frills. The architecture is a result of the construction itself and the materials used in it.
In the search for a contrast with the straight lines of the main buildings, curved lines were adopted in the secondary elements of the architectural composition, such as the volumes for the fire escape and the water tank.
The project design concept considered the relationship with the landscape, which provided all the apartments with a direct view of the theme park, located to the south, or a lush view of Armação beach in the north face.
The contemporary architecture proposed for this architectural ensemble makes use of characteristic elements of modern Brazilian architecture, such as cobogos, concrete gargoyles, which overflow the water from the roof of the tower, the piles, and the structure, as well as the architecture itself.
