This project seeks to question certain notions about living and how we relate to the environment. Its design frames a segment of the landscape to transform it into an exterior refuge, placing special emphasis on the structural elements that define the limits between what is built and what is inherited by nature.

The first approach to the site, located in a private condo in the central north coast of Chile, was mediated by abundant wild vegetation and by a series of rock clusters that touched tangentially, generating among them voids of different size and shapes. This image was the inspiration for a design that transformed those stones into habitable volumes and the voids in the different patios that are part of the project.

Casa Las Vizcachas is the second home of an adult man who hopes that in the future it will become his permanent residence; this determined a specific program segmented into 3 blocks. The largest one houses the master bedroom with private bathroom, as well as the integrated living room, dining room and kitchen; the second element is intended for the bedroom of the owner's daughter a guest room and a large bathroom. Both element touch tangentially, but it is only possible to transit from one to the other through the terraces. Later, a slightly turned third volume was built to accommodate a small gym.

The access is defined by a ramp and a small patio, configured by an exposed concrete wall; when crossing this area, it is possible to see the central patio in foreshortening. This space is the core of the entire project and has different elements that help enhance the experience of inhabiting the outside. A series of walkways unite the volumes and configure different terraces, being complemented by a concrete ellipse that serves as a fireplace and an “endless” swimming pool that instead of extending towards the sea, is facing the patio, enhancing its position. All this space is crossed by a 21 m long laminated wood that, in addition to supporting the entire roof structure of the main volume, “frames” this small section of the landscape. Despite the fact that it is a beach house in formal terms, it shies away from this typology by turning towards itself. It establishes visual relationships both with the sea and with the surrounding nature, but it does not open completely to its natural environment; This generates a different experience, which is not linked to literally going to sit on the seashore, but nevertheless offers the possibility of enjoying the beach. All the activities that can be carried out in a second home are subject to the patio, where you can sunbathe, enjoy the pool or share and incredible sunset with friends.
 
The house is built on a concrete slab that rises from the ground. Besides that, the house was designed 100% in laminated timber. All the structural elements and the interior walls were prefabricated in a factory located 800 kms away from the site and transported by truck. This strategy allowed to save time in construction and minimized the impact of the process on the ground. The main frame is in laminated pine, while the exterior cladding is in ribbed Raulí. The interiors, meanwhile, are clad in Coigüe, a choice based on the intention of creating diaphanous spaces, connected with the environment and promoting the typical relaxation of a landscape like this, but appealing to its own language that moves away from usual textures and elements. The window facade that divides the social areas with the central patio is 9m long and can be completely opened, generating a single large environment in which the limits of each area seem to blur. However, thanks to the upper beam, the north wall designed as a wooden latticework and other structural elements, the space is contained and protected.
 
Nature is a gift and something that always has been there and, in this scenario, the house seeks to provide a space that delivers a certain sensation of refuge in the midst of this gigantic and uncontainable expanse that is the ocean. The landscaping project also follows this logic and basically consisted of recognizing the different native species that grow in this part of the country and generating an efficient irrigation system that would allow them to become stronger as the wind here can be brutal during most time of the year. Within the perimeter of the house, a white shell was used as part of the landscape, as well as a series of rocks that were extracted from the site and that are now part of the design as a reminiscence of the first approach to the site, and that through the architecture mutated until they became a shelter.

Este proyecto busca cuestionar ciertas nociones sobre el habitar y cómo nos relacionamos con el entorno. Su diseño enmarca un segmento del paisaje para transformarlo en un refugio exterior, poniendo especial énfasis en los elementos estructurales que definen los límites entre lo construido y lo heredado por la naturaleza.

El primer acercamiento al sitio, ubicado en un condominio privado en la costa norte central de Chile, estuvo mediado por abundante vegetación silvestre y por una serie de cúmulos rocosos que se tocaban tangencialmente, generando entre ellos vacíos de diferentes tamaños y formas. Esta imagen fue la inspiración para un diseño que transformó esas piedras en volúmenes habitables y los vacíos en los diferentes patios que forman parte del proyecto.

Casa Las Vizcachas es el segundo hogar de un hombre adulto que espera que en el futuro se convierta en su residencia permanente; esto determinó un programa específico segmentado en 3 bloques. El más grande alberga el dormitorio principal con baño privado, así como el living, el comedor y la cocina integrados; el segundo elemento está destinado al dormitorio de la hija del propietario, una habitación de invitados y un amplio baño. Ambos elementos se tocan tangencialmente, pero sólo es posible transitar de uno a otro a través de las terrazas. Posteriormente, se construyó un tercer volumen ligeramente volcado para albergar un pequeño gimnasio.

El acceso está definido por una rampa y un pequeño patio, configurado por un muro de hormigón visto; al atravesar esta zona, es posible ver el patio central en escorzo. Este espacio es el núcleo de todo el proyecto y cuenta con diferentes elementos que ayudan a potenciar la experiencia de habitar el exterior. Una serie de pasarelas unen los volúmenes y configuran distintas terrazas, complementándose con una elipse de hormigón que hace las veces de fogón y una piscina “sin fin” que en lugar de extenderse hacia el mar, se enfrenta al patio, potenciando su posición. Todo este espacio está atravesado por una viga de madera laminada de 21 m de largo que, además de soportar toda la estructura de cubierta del volumen principal, “enmarca” una pequeña sección del paisaje. A pesar de que es una casa de playa en términos formales, se aleja de esta tipología volviéndose hacia sí misma. Establece relaciones visuales tanto con el mar como con la naturaleza que lo rodea, pero no se abre completamente a su entorno natural; Esto genera una experiencia diferente, que no está ligada a ir literalmente a sentarse a la orilla del mar, sino que sin embargo ofrece la posibilidad de disfrutar de la playa. Todas las actividades que se pueden realizar en una segunda residencia están sujetas al patio, donde se puede tomar el sol, disfrutar de la piscina o compartir una increíble puesta de sol con amigos.

La casa está construida sobre una losa de hormigón que se eleva desde el suelo. Además de eso, la casa fue diseñada 100% en madera laminada. Todos los elementos estructurales y los muros interiores fueron prefabricados en una fábrica ubicada a 800 km de la obra y transportados en camión. Esta estrategia permitió ahorrar tiempo en la construcción y minimizó el impacto del proceso en el terreno. La estructura principal es de pino laminado, mientras que el revestimiento exterior es de Raulí nervado. Los interiores, por su parte, se revisten de Coigüe, una elección basada en la intención de crear espacios diáfanos, conectados con el entorno y que propicie el relax propio de un paisaje como este, pero apelando a un lenguaje propio que se aleja de texturas y elementos habituales. La fachada de ventana que divide las áreas sociales con el patio central tiene 9m de largo y se puede abrir completamente, generando un solo gran ambiente en el que los límites de cada área parecen desdibujarse. Sin embargo, gracias a la viga superior, el muro norte diseñado como una celosía de madera y otros elementos estructurales, el espacio queda contenido y protegido.

La naturaleza es un regalo y algo que siempre ha estado ahí y, en este escenario, la casa busca brindar un espacio que brinde cierta sensación de refugio en medio de esta gigantesca e incontenible extensión que es el océano. El proyecto de paisajismo también sigue esta lógica y básicamente consistió en reconocer las diferentes especies nativas que crecen en esta parte del país y generar un sistema de riego eficiente que les permitiera fortalecerse ya que el viento aquí puede ser brutal durante la mayor parte del año. . Dentro del perímetro de la casa se utilizó una concha blanca como parte del paisaje, así como una serie de rocas que fueron extraídas del sitio y que ahora forman parte del diseño como reminiscencia del primer acercamiento al sitio, y que a través de la arquitectura fueron mutando hasta convertirse en un refugio.
