Civico 29 | Gae Avitabile

A labyrinth of narrow lanes, the brightly whitewashed houses, the sound of the wind and the sea: Sperlonga is a coastal town dating back to Roman times, perched above a rocky spur facing out to sea along the Riviera di Ulisse on the Lazio coast (Italy).

In this location which brings together the human hand, echoes of legends and natural beauty, the architect and designer Gae Avitabile has taken on the new interior design project for the Civico 29 cocktail bar: a gentle intervention in a landscape requiring respect, between white walls and the sea, levity and genius loci. Substance, textures, colours and sounds of the area are indeed the linchpins of the project – small in scale, although with a strong visual impact – reproduced through the use of a limited number of simple materials specifically out of respect for the town and its lost simplicity.

Gae's first decision was to eliminate the pre-existing window fixtures: a spectacular solution which breaks down the barriers between the indoors and out, making the contact with the incredible surrounding panorama even more palpable. The original choice of the coverings and furnishings magnifies the presence of the maritime landscape in the bar's interiors: the walls are covered with an aluminium mesh curtain made by Spanish company Kriskadecor, which moves with gusts of wind and creates an elegant sound reminiscent of a coastal breeze. Traditional European hollow bricks, filled with white lime and then covered with resin, are used for an unusual purpose – to create a floor which lends the space a flavour of lost craftsmanship.

The bar, its sinuous shape reminiscent of the movement of the waves, is an implicit reference to the sea and draws inspiration from the area’s great pieces of architecture, metaphysical presences which can be seen from the train window. The Falkland lamp, Munari’s homage to the fishermen’s pots, is encapsulated in the suspended custom metal mesh structure above the bar: a touch of white in contact with the palette of blue and brown, reiterating the colours of the surrounding landscape. Wrapping up the project, the bathroom is a small trunk covered in wallpaper with exotic motifs: a reference to the nostalgia of travel and an invitation to symbolically look for new inspirations elsewhere.

An interior design project created by Gae Avitabile as a poetic tribute to the atmospheres of the Mediterranean, brought together in a space which seamlessly blends landscape and architecture. Gae's experience in experimenting with new materials and designing furniture allows him to make design choices which reveal in-depth knowledge of the materials themselves and their potential alternative uses.

Un dedalo di strette viuzze, le case bianchissime dipinte in calce, il suono del vento e del mare: Sperlonga è un borgo marinaro dalla storia millenaria, arroccato sopra ad uno sperone roccioso proteso verso il mare, lungo la Riviera di Ulisse, nel litorale laziale.

In questo contesto che unisce mano dell’uomo, echi del mito e bellezze naturali, l’architetto e designer Gae Avitabile realizza il nuovo progetto di interni per il cocktail bar Civico 29: un intervento dal segno gentile nel paesaggio da rispettare, tra pareti bianche e mare, levità e genius loci. Materia, texture, cromie e suoni del territorio sono infatti i cardini su cui si basa l'intervento – di ridotte dimensioni eppure dal forte impatto visivo – riprodotti attraverso l’utilizzo di pochi e semplici materiali proprio a rispetto del borgo e della sua semplicità perduta.

La prima decisione di Gae è di eliminare gli infissi preesistenti: soluzione scenografica che annulla il confine tra dentro e fuori e rende ancora più palpabile il contatto con l’incredibile panorama circostante. La scelta non scontata dei rivestimenti e dei complementi d’arredo amplifica la presenza del paesaggio marittimo negli interni del locale: le pareti sono rivestite da una tenda a maglie di alluminio realizzata dall’azienda spagnola Kriskadecor che, al soffio del vento, produce un elegante suono che richiama la brezza marina. Dei classici mattoni forati in terracotta, riempiti di calce bianca e poi resinati, vengono utilizzati inusualmente a pavimento, per donare a questo spazio un sapore di artigianalità perduta.

Il bancone, dal sinuoso moto a onde, è un implicito richiamo al mare e trae ispirazione dalle grandi architetture della zona, presenze metafisiche che si osservano dal finestrino del treno. La lampada Falkland, omaggio di Munari alle nasse dei pescatori, è incapsulata nella struttura pensile di rete metallica realizzata ad hoc che sovrasta il bancone: un tocco di bianco a contatto con le palette del blu e del marrone, a ribadire la cromia del paesaggio circostante. A conclusione del progetto, il bagno è un piccolo scrigno rivestito di carta da parati dai motivi esotici: un richiamo alla nostalgia del viaggio e un invito a cercare simbolicamente nuove ispirazioni nell’altrove.

Un intervento di interior concepito da Gae Avitabile come un tributo poetico alle atmosfere del Mediterraneo, sintetizzato in uno spazio che si articola senza soluzione di continuità tra paesaggio e architettura. L’esperienza nella sperimentazione di nuovi materiali e di progettazione di complementi d’arredo consente a Gae di optare per intuizioni progettuali che rivelano un’accurata conoscenza delle materie stesse e dei loro potenziali utilizzi alternativi.
