Joan Miró Office Building | GCA Architects

Designed by GCA Architects, the project aims to renovate the existing office building to create open-plan spaces while respecting the pre-existence. 

The object of the refurbishment is a building with an exposed brickwork finish in Carrer de Joan Miró, in Barcelona. The intervention on the façades is very specific, respecting the building as a whole in terms of both form and materiality. The proportions of the openings in the façades are increased to facilitate the entry of light and natural ventilation, and the wood between the windows is replaced with exposed brickwork, just like the existing façade. The materiality of the façade lends majesty to the building through a rhythmic and unitary volumetric composition, which manifests itself on both the outside and the inside. The building envelope represents the character of the building.

In the central area of the façade, the openings are enlarged and lined around the perimeter with metallic material, creating a contrast with the exposed brickwork and emphasising the access to the building.

Compositionally, the project proposes the reconfiguration of the building's vertical communication core, rotating it by 90 degrees to generate a wide interior connection corridor between the two streets. The intervention facilitates the entry of natural light into the lobbies and all levels of the building. The result is a fluid and open space where the interior lines play with the light and with the views of the outside streets, which are encapsulated in the windows. 

In the office area, a contemporary open-plan space dialogues with the textures and chromatic range of the existing building, maintaining the premise of quality already provided by the original materials.  The character of the new way of experiencing the workspaces, with an open plan and exposed installations, is balanced by the warm colours of the façade and the vibrant textures of the exposed concrete structure. The new office spaces thus become a space suspended between past and future.

Integrar el pasado: renovación de un edificio de oficinas existente

El diseño de GCA Architects tiene como objetivo la reforma del edificio de oficinas existente para conseguir espacios diáfanos en el respeto de la preexistencia.

El objeto de la rehabilitación es un edificio con acabado en obra vista en Carrer de Joan Miró, en Barcelona. En las fachadas, la intervención es muy puntual respetando el conjunto del edificio tanto en sentido formal como de materialidad. Se aumentan las proporciones de los huecos en las fachadas para facilitar la entrada de luz y la ventilación natural y se sustituye la madera que había entre ventanas por obra vista, igual que la fachada existente. La materialidad de la fachada otorga majestuosidad al edificio a través de una composición volumétrica rítmica y unitaria, que se manifiesta tanto en el exterior como en el interior. La envolvente representa el carácter del edificio.

En la zona central de la fachada, los huecos se amplían y se forran perimetralmente con material metálico, generando un contraste con la obra vista y enfatizando el acceso al edificio.

Compositivamente, el proyecto plantea la reconfiguración del núcleo de comunicación vertical del edificio, rotándolo 90 grados para generar un amplio corredor de conexión interior entre las dos calles. La intervención facilita la entrada de luz natural en los lobbies y en todos los niveles del edificio. El resultado es un espacio fluido y abierto donde las líneas interiores juegan con la luz y con las vistas de las calles exteriores, que encontramos encapsuladas en las ventanas.

En la zona de oficinas, un espacio diáfano contemporáneo dialoga con las texturas y la gama cromática del edificio existente, manteniendo la premisa de calidad que ya otorgaban los materiales originales.  El carácter de la nueva forma de vivir los espacios de trabajo, con planta abierta y con instalaciones vistas, se equilibra con los colores cálidos de la fachada y las texturas vibrantes de la estructura vista en hormigón. Los nuevos espacios de oficinas se convierten así en un espacio en suspensión entre pasado y futuro.
