Museum of Fine Arts | Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos

The jury of the competition for the new Museum of Fine Arts in the city of Vannes (France) has awarded First Prize to the project by Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos (Madrid-Berlin) with the collaboration of associate architect Richard Faure.

The Chateau de L'Hermine is characterized by its boundary condition, built in the 19th century directly on the ruins of the ramparts dating from the 14th century. The new extension generates a public space within the city walls between the medieval perimeter and the dwellings of the historic center by means of a longitudinal volume that adapts the slopes of its roofs to the irregular geometry of the surrounding context. The old castle will be restored and rehabilitated respecting its original architecture, while the extension takes the form of a metallic skin that unifies the complex and dialogues with the historic buildings while transforming the museum's image in the city.

The new Chateau de L'Hermine Museum, with a total surface area of 2,700 m2, will be integrated into the historical context of Vannes, through an intervention conscious of the need to create public spaces for the use of citizens by provoking a dialogue between contemporary architecture and the memory of the place.
