DOMESTICO: relating to the home

The home by principle is evolutionary, and adapts to new conditions. Doméstico refers to a habitable artifact that allows the condensing of everyday activities into one organizing element that transforms easily, and does not sacrifice comfort.

This artifact is located in a 27,5 sqm mini studio inside Moshe Safdie & Uribe Schwarzkopf’s Qorner building, near La Carolina Park, in the city of Quito. The project is born from the need to solve, through architectural strategies, the spatial and formal limitations of this new way of living, that relates directly to urban and social mobility.

The shape, orientation, and functions are conditioned by the geometry of the space, the relation with visuals, as well as the location of the building’s installations. This results in the design of an artifact, from floor to ceiling, that is able to divide the space into two areas:

a)    The element that holds activities, services, and equipment,

b)    The resulting space that is able to become an open space with no elements.

The object holds different possibilities under a single shape and material; independent modules that relate to specific functions solve the needs. Different scenarios were analyzed to summarize the living needs, which are: a kitchen area, storage space, laundry room, bed/bedroom, library, desk/dining table, bar, and closet.                

Every single one of these modules is organized through an horizontal axis that divides the object into two parts; the lower area for everyday activities, and the upper module for storage, which is at reach through a mobile ladder.

The design of mobile, flexible, and foldable elements that transform easily and conform the entire artifact was one of the main design strategies.   

Doméstico presents itself as a connection between architecture and furniture design, in which the space is created in relation to the new needs, and the constant reduction of space. This premise questions the traditional dwelling limits, and puts in evidence the new parameters of contemporary domestic living, where physical and social flexibility based on new personal relationships are predominant.

Hoy parece más claro que nunca que nuestra civilización ha abandonado la estabilidad con la que el mundo se presentó en el pasado para, por el contrario, asumir el dinamismo de todas las energías que configuran nuestro entorno. Precisamente porque en nuestra cultura contemporánea atendemos prioritariamente al cambio.

DOMÉSTICO: de lo relacionado al hogar.

El hogar por principio es evolutivo, y se adapta a las nuevas condiciones. Doméstico hace referencia a un artefacto habitable que permite condensar las exigencias de las actividades domésticas cotidianas en un elemento ordenador, de fácil transformación y que no sacrifica el confort del usuario.

Este artefacto se emplaza en una mini suite - estudio de 27.50 m2 en el edificio Qorner de Moshe Safdie y Uribe Schwarzkopf en el sector del parque La Carolina, en Quito. El encargo nace de la necesidad de resolver, mediante estrategias arquitectónicas, las limitaciones espaciales y formales de esta nueva propuesta de habitar, relacionada con la accesibilidad y movilidad urbano - social.

La morfología, orientación y usos, están condicionados por la geometría del espacio, el control de las visuales, así como la ubicación de las instalaciones eléctricas y sanitarias propias del edificio. Por ello, se plantea un artefacto de piso a techo como un elemento ordenador que divide el área de la suite en dos flancos:

a)    La zona de servicios y actividades condensadas en el artefacto habitable.

b)    El espacio resultante bajo la posibilidad de tener un espacio libre, amplio y sin elementos.

El artefacto asume diferentes funciones bajo una  misma forma y material, se pensó en módulos independientes en función de su uso. Se estudiaron los posibles escenarios y su demanda espacial y funcional para condensar: cocina, despensa, closet de blancos y limpieza, cama/dormitorio, rack biblioteca, escritorio/desayunador, bar y closet personal.

Cada uno de estos módulos está atravesado por un eje horizontal que divide el artefacto en dos partes, la parte inferior para realizar actividades y la parte superior como almacén, aprovechando este eje horizontal para ubicar una escalera móvil y removible.

Se utilizaron elementos móviles, plegables y deslizables de fácil transformación para la conformación del artefacto mutable.

Doméstico se presenta como un puente entre la arquitectura y el mobiliario, donde el espacio se crea en función de las -nuevas necesidades- y la constante disminución de espacio, este planteamiento cuestiona los límites del habitar convencional y pone en evidencia los nuevos parámetros del habitar doméstico contemporáneo donde predomina la flexibilidad física y social basados en las nuevas relaciones personales.
