AL TAULELL: the beauty of imperfection

The creative studio Viruta Lab designs Al Taulell, a restaurant where the user is immersed in the hustle and bustle of the local street markets.

The beauty of nudity transferred to architecture. Al Taulell is conceived in a space of more than 145m2; a restaurant that rescues in its interior design the architectural imprint of Arrancapins, a charismatic and historic neighborhood of Valencia. The architecture and interior design studio Viruta Lab have materialized this project through an exercise of reinterpretation and adaptation of the traditional local design and the uniqueness of its context.

Al Taulell evokes the bustle of the markets that fill the streets of this popular neighborhood, full of ephemeral stalls of canvas and metal, where to enjoy the typical and fresh product of the local gastronomy. A space that highlights the essence of Valencia and its most traditional architecture.

The imperfect and raw character of its interior design, with exposed bricks, patinas of paint or the original ironwork of its windows, appeals for the respect and architectural consolidation of the most emblematic neighborhoods of Valencia, which weekly host these street markets. Its walls, modified by previous interventions, have been sifted by Viruta Lab with elements of Valencian traditions such as the Alicante shutter of solid wood slats, so representative of this city.

The geometric irregularity of the space enables the restaurant to be zoned: a lobby that is presented as a showcase for fresh products leads to a dining room with continuous tables that enhance social relations.

The foyer, designed with a double-height bar that embraces the semi-open kitchen, invites users to sit down and enjoy this new gastronomic experience. The division between the two areas is materialized with arched shelves on storage modules, which appear as a backdrop to the room and are dressed in decorative elements that bring a warm, cozy and comfortable aesthetic to the space. In the dining room, several tall longitudinal tables are projected as common bars that evoke the family and social character of the neighborhood. The heads of the tables have been designed in a semicircle with a double metal ring that allows the user's experience to be independent and creates a new table for those who prefer a quicker and more informal tapas experience.

María Daroz and David Puerta, the creative team of Viruta Lab, have designed all the elements that make up the furniture of this restaurant, based on a very refined Art Nouveau aesthetic and a minimal color range: gold, two blue hues and off-white. The bars and tables are designed with a metal profile of circular section on porcelain and are modularly crowned by suspended acoustic domes that also provide light to the space. To enhance the feeling of being in the street, the ceiling generates an irregular veil with untreated iron gratings, which will age with the time as they will be integrated into the historical patina of the space.

Through its architecture, the most traditional, social and human side of Valencia culture is rescued at Al Taulell. A space born of tradition and avant-garde. A tribute to the authentic street markets. An ode to the Mediterranean lifestyle.

AL TAULELL: la belleza de lo imperfecto

El estudio de arquitectura e interiorismo Viruta Lab diseña Al Taulell, un restaurante que adentra al usuario al bullicio de un mercadillo de barrio.

La belleza de la desnudez trasladada a la arquitectura. En un espacio de más de 145m2 ubicado en Arrancapins, nace Al Taulell, un restaurante que rescata en su interiorismo la impronta arquitectónica de este carismático e histórico barrio de València. El estudio creativo Viruta Lab ha materializado este proyecto a través de un ejercicio de reinterpretación y adaptación del diseño tradicional autóctono y de la singularidad de su entorno.

Al Taulell evoca el bullicio de los numerosos mercados que invaden las calles de este barrio popular, repletos de puestos efímeros de lonas y metal, donde disfrutar del producto típico y fresco de la gastronomía local. Un espacio que pone en valor la esencia de la ‘terreta’ y su arquitectura más tradicional.

El carácter imperfecto y desnudo de su interiorismo, con ladrillos vistos, pátinas de pintura o la forja original de sus ventanales, aboga por el respeto y la consolidación arquitectónica de los barrios más emblemáticos de València, que semanalmente acogen esos mercadillos ambulantes. Sus paredes, afectadas por intervenciones anteriores, han sido tamizadas por Viruta Lab con elementos de costumbrismo valenciano como la persiana alicantina de lamas de madera maciza, tan características en la ciudad.

La irregularidad geométrica del espacio permite zonificar el restaurante: un vestíbulo que se presenta como escaparate del producto fresco para abrir paso a un comedor de mesas corridas que potencian las relaciones sociales.

El vestíbulo, resuelto con una barra a doble altura que abraza la cocina semiabierta, invita a los usuarios a sentarse y disfrutar de esta nueva experiencia gastronómica. La división entre ambas zonas se materializa con unas estanterías en forma de arco sobre módulos de almacenaje, que aparecen como telón de fondo de la sala y están vestidas con elementos decorativos que aportan una estética cálida, doméstica y confortable al espacio. En el comedor, se proyectan numerosas mesas altas longitudinales a modo de barras comunes que aluden al carácter familiar y social del barrio. Las cabeceras de las mesas han sido diseñadas en semicírculo con un doble aro metálico que permite independizar la experiencia del usuario y crear una nueva mesa para aquellos que prefieran un tapeo de pie, más rápido e informal.

María Daroz y David Puerta, el equipo creativo de Viruta Lab, han sido los autores del diseño de todos los elementos que conforman el mobiliario de este restaurante, basado en una estética Art Nouveau muy depurada y a partir de una gama de color mínima: el dorado, dos tonalidades de azul y blanco roto. Las barras y las mesas están diseñadas con un perfil metálico de sección circular sobre porcelánico y aparecen coronadas modularmente por cúpulas acústicas suspendidas que aportan, además, luz al espacio. Para potenciar esa sensación de estar en la calle y rescatar la característica costumbre de ‘tomar la fresca’, el techo genera un velo irregular con emparrillados de ferralla sin trata, los cuales irán envejeciendo con el paso del tiempo a medida que se integrarán en la pátina histórica del local.

Así pues, Al Taulell rescata en su arquitectura el lado más tradicional, social y humano de la cultura valenciana. Un espacio que nace de la tradición y la vanguardia. Un homenaje a los ricos mercadillos populares. Una oda al estilo de vida mediterráneo.
