At the junction between the valleys of Pflersch and Wipptal, a little above the center of Gossensaß village, nature formed a pulpit-like ledge of terrain after the last ice age. Situated about 1,100m above sea level, it offers a unique panoramic view into both valleys and up into the high mountains. For a young family, this prominent spot was to serve as the building site for their home.

The peculiarities of the site, including a steep south-facing slope of up to 50°, necessitated a punctual intervention with a structure evolving primarily into the vertical while following the steep terrain. The design resulted in a monolith made of insulating lightweight concrete – a material that responds to all requirements and braves the harsh conditions of its exposed location. The house’s tower- like shape resulted not only in a small footprint but also created ground-level accesses on both the lowest and top floor. Both entrances were finished with diamond-shaped wooden shingles, which in color and shape resemble the bark of trees.

Due to the slope, roughly half of the three lower floors remain underground. However, those spaces were designed with the basic needs of the growing family in mind. The monolith's 75cm thick walls provide protection and security. Precise openings allow targeted views into the surrounding mountain landscape, with deep jambs becoming spatial elements in their own right, which the residents are able to avail themselves of in everyday life for sitting, resting and observing. In the core of the house, the different floors are accessed by a compact spiral staircase. Reaching up to 6 meters in height, the top floor forms an open living and lounge area, extending under the widely overhanging roof. A surrounding window provides an unobstructed panoramic view – in the west far into the untouched landscapes of the Pflerschtal with its mountain ranges and the distinctive mountain peak of “Wetterspitze”, in the south and east well over the village and up to the peaks of the Alpine main ridge. Through a concentrated choice of colors and materials inside the living space, the eye is led to the view, with the room itself holding on to its reservedly protective, enveloping function. In the evening it becomes a large parlor with an almost sacred atmosphere, becoming the shared center of the family's life.

A spacious terrace, enjoying privacy, is located to the west of the house. Orientation, embedding and view create the impression of living in an unspoiled place amidst the mountains. Further, balcony-like outdoor areas around the house, on the other hand, provide a view of the village and convey a sense of community and belonging. The house’s outer shell was cast smoothly from structural lightweight concrete. Thus, all the functions of the façade are merged into one single layer: protecting, insulating, and supporting. The roof is covered with diamond-shaped concrete tiles, which were handmade in a nearly 200-year-old process - each one unique, with the recipe and surface tailored precisely to the project. The entire building envelope is designed monochromatically. Its soil brown shades are reminiscent of the tree bark of the adjacent forests, of wild blackberry hedges, the dry undergrowth, grasses in the winter months.

The structure of the low-energy house, certified KlimaHaus A Nature, originates from the soil at its very location and is firmly rooted to it. Being built of mineral material, it offers expressive durability. Natural, grounded materials also characterize the image inside and create a down-to-earth and homely atmosphere where the family members can escape from their hectic everyday life. Leaving aside a purely representative villa aesthetic, the rooms refer to the essentials – in a balanced tension between human, nature and craftsmanship, they are inviting to touch the surfaces and awaken the desire to give them patina – to enhance them with life. The lower three floors, made of noble materials, create a neutral, bright and unobtrusive environment. In contrast, the attic space, in terms of spatial dramaturgy located at the end of the introverted spiral staircase, opens up in a particularly defined and powerful way. Here, the valuable and representative feeling is carried by the surfaces’ structure and their earthy tonality. Focus is on the human being, embedded in the mighty and magical natural space.

Thus, the interior presents itself with untreated fir for floorings, windows, doors and furniture, as well as handmade terrazzo surfaces. The lime plasters used were applied smoothed with the locally available silver quartzite, which had been finely grained. Bronzed brass matched to the color of the concrete and handcrafted glass complement the material palette and give the home its desired durability.

In this way, the materials also become a mirror of the lively history of the location, which once achieved great prosperity thanks to silver mining and even became an important thermal spa destination in the early 19th century. Tradition and the haptic, sensory experiences that arise from it - such as those of bathing and bathing culture itself - make us aware of the value of handcrafted, timeless materials and allow us to preserve them in the long term - until they outlive us.

The residential building was the first monolithic building of insulating lightweight concrete to receive the KlimaHaus A Nature certification, achievable throughout Italy, which is based on a strictly monitored evaluation of, among other things, the carbon footprint throughout the whole manufacturing process of materials, reaching as far as for the living comfort. With the inclusion of intelligent building technology, the overall energy efficiency reaches the even higher classification KlimaHaus Gold. The certifications attest to the house's current highest standard in terms of ecology, economy and sustainability.

All'incrocio tra la Val di Fleres e l’Alta Valle Isarco, appena sopra il centro di Colle Isarco, si erge un promontorio simile a un pulpito formatosi dopo l'ultima era glaciale. Questo luogo situato a circa 1.100 metri sul livello del mare, offre una vista panoramica unica su entrambe le valli e sulle alte montagne. Una giovane famiglia a scelto questo luogo prominente come zona dove costruire la propria casa.

Le caratteristiche particolari del sito, tra cui un pendio esposto a sud con una pendenza che raggiunge i 50°, hanno reso necessario che l’intervento si sviluppasse principalmente verso l'alto. Il risultato è un monolite in calcestruzzo isolante - un materiale che risponde molto bene a tutte le necessità e che qui e sfida le dure condizioni di un luogo molto esposto. Grazie alla sua forma a torre, l’edificio ha un ingombro ridotto e si collega al terreno circostante con accessi sia al piano più basso che a quello più alto. Le due entrate sono rivestite con scandole di legno a forma di diamante, il cui colore e forma ricordano la corteccia degli alberi.

A causa della pendenza, circa la metà dei tre piani inferiori sono sotterranei. Il design spaziale risponde alle necessità di una famiglia in crescita. Le pareti monolitiche spesse 75 cm offrono protezione e sicurezza. Le aperture concentrate offrono viste mirate sul paesaggio montano circostante, con profondi davanzali interni che diventano elementi spaziali a sé stanti, che i proprietari usano nella vita quotidiana per sedersi, riposare e osservare. Al suo centro, la casa ha una compatta scala a chiocciola. Il sottotetto a pianta aperta ha un soffitto alto fino a 6 metri e contiene la zona giorno, la quale si estende visivamente fino all’esterno sotto il tetto ampiamente sporgente. Una fascia di finestre che circonda l'edificio offre una vista panoramica a tutto tondo senza ostacoli - a ovest fino ai paesaggi incontaminati della Val di Fleres con le sue catene montuose e l'impressionante Cima del Tempo, a sud e a est fino al centro abitato e ad altre importanti cime delle Alpi. Attraverso una scelta ridotta di colori e materiali all'interno dello spazio abitativo, l'occhio viene condotto verso lil panorama circostante, facendo sì che la stanza stessa assuma una funzione protettiva e avvolgente. La sera invece questa stanza, che forma il centro comune della vita della famiglia, si trasforma assumendo un'atmosfera calda e una potenza quasi sacra.

Una spaziosa terrazza, riparata dalla vista, si trova a ovest della casa. L'orientamento, l'inserimento nel terreno e la vista creano l'impressione di vivere in un luogo incontaminato in mezzo alle montagne. Una loggia situata nell’altro lato della casa fornisce invece una vista sul villaggio e trasmettono un senso di comunità e di appartenenza. Il guscio esterno dell’edificio è stato gettato in calcestruzzo strutturale alleggerito. Le pareti esterne assumono così tutte le funzioni della facciata in un unico strato: proteggere, isolare e sostenere. Il tetto è coperto da tegole in cemento a forma di diamante, che sono state fatte a mano in un processo che ha quasi 200 anni - ognuna è unica, con la ricetta e la superficie studiata su misura per il progetto. L'intero involucro dell'edificio è monocromatico. Il suo colore marrone terra ricorda la corteccia degli alberi delle foreste vicine, le siepi di more selvatiche, il sottobosco secco e le erbe nei mesi invernali.

La struttura è cresciuta dal terreno nella sua posizione ed è saldamente radicata in esso. Il suo materiale minerale gli conferisce una durata espressiva. I materiali naturali definiscono l'immagine degli interni e creano un'atmosfera semplice, accogliente e rilassante in cui i membri della famiglia possono rifuggire dalla loro vita frenetica di tutti i giorni.

Abbandonando un'estetica di villa puramente rappresentativa, gli spazi puntano all’essenzialità. In un equilibrio di tensione tra uomo, natura e artigianato, si è invitati a toccare le superfici risvegliando il desiderio di dare loro una patina, di lasciarle vivere. I tre piani inferiori sono composti da materiali nobili per creare un ambiente neutro, luminoso e sobrio. Al contrario, lo spazio del tetto, situato in termini di drammaturgia spaziale al termine della scala a chiocciola, si apre in modo particolarmente definito e potente. La sensazione preziosa e rappresentativa è conferita dalla spazialità e dai toni terrosi delle sue superfici. L'attenzione è sull'essere umano, incorporato nel potente e magico spazio naturale.

L'interno è caratterizzato da abete non trattato per i pavimenti, le finestre, le porte e i mobili, nonché da superfici in terrazzo lavorate a mano. Gli intonaci di calce usati sono stati levigati con della quarzite argentata finemente macinata disponibile localmente. L'ottone brunito e il vetro artigianale abbinato al colore del cemento completano la tavolozza di materiali artigianali e conferiscono alla casa un senso di grande qualità e durevolezza.

I materiali sono anche un riflesso della vivace storia del luogo, che un tempo raggiunse una grande prosperità grazie all'estrazione dell'argento e all'inizio del XIX secolo, divenne un'importante stazione termale. La tradizione e le esperienze tattili e sensoriali che ne derivano - come quelle dei bagni termali - ci rendono consapevoli del valore dei materiali artigianali e senza tempo che ci permettono di preservarne le qualità a lungo.

L'edificio residenziale è stato il primo edificio in calcestruzzo isolato a ricevere la certificazione CasaClima A Nature, che può essere ottenuta in tutta Italia e si basa su una valutazione rigorosamente monitorata, tra le altre cose, dell'impronta ecologica e della qualità ambientale. Con l'inclusione di installazioni tecniche di ultima generazione, l'efficienza energetica complessiva di CO2 raggiunge inoltre la classificazione ancora più alta di CasaClima Gold. Le certificazioni attestano che la casa soddisfa i più elevati standard attuali in termini di ecologia, economia e sostenibilità.
