Casa para Aitor | Arquitectura a Contrapelo

Daruma is a Japanese amulet consisting of an ovoid wooden figure with large, absent of pupils eyes and is linked to the accomplishment of a task. The right eye is painted at the beginning of the project, remaining incomplete as a daily reminder of the intense process necessary to complete the work, at which time the left eye is drawn to complete the figure.

This peculiar character, somehow, has been transfigured into the project's commission itself, in a compressed plot between party walls of reduced dimensions (9.40 x 7.70 m) which is located in an urban environment of low single-family houses partly isolated due to its proximity to the train tracks as they pass through the city of Seville.

The contour conditions of the plot, together with the insertion of several essential elements demanded by the client (a pool, a fireplace, a tree, a terrace, a barbecue, a double kitchen), led to a reinterpretation of the spatial sequences of the traditional Sevillian patio houses mixed with the concepts of use of the Japanese households, which are reflected in the language and internal functioning of a simple but also unconventional architecture.

The house, hermetic and dense in its relationship with its external environment, gets open from its core through a side patio that allows the generation of a new interior facade facing south and organizes the adjacent rooms, as well as the sequence of activities carried out within them.
The ground floor is fragmented in its access allowing the entire depth of the space to be perceived right from the hallway, still outdoors, from which the entrance to the first large area of the house takes place: the living room & kitchen which, in turn, are extended back to the patio through wide practicable glass joinery.

Attached to the perimeter is the staircase, conceived as the only corridor of the house, which opens up the surrounding rooms making them fluid and permeable. Likewise, it acts as a physical barrier between the domestic spaces, the adjacent buildings and the street. It is also a modulating element for the light that runs from the skylight located on the roof through all the levels of the building until it reaches the ground floor.
The built volume is extended on both sides of the central void on the first floor, creating the ancillary spaces of the master bedroom: an open-plan toilet in the front side and a storage and dressing area at the back of the building.
The positioning of these rooms in the intermediate level facilitates in turn the generation of the exterior spaces of the penthouse, consisting of a small rear balcony and a rooftop area on the façade, of greater proportions, where the pool and barbecue area are located. In this light, the guest area, equipped with a small toilet and secondary kitchen, is able to transform itself into a flexible space that expands and appropriates the adjacent terrace by completely opening the sliding glass door that separates them.

The use of continuous and neutral materials on the floor and walls contrasts with brick vault ceilings, birch wood furniture attached to the staircase, and black aluminum veneer in glass joinery that give character and dynamism to the spaces without diminishing the importance of the light and the visual and physical transparency of the building. All this under the premise of a modest, informal and flexible habitability which the proposed architecture has tried to contain and induce.
Its left eye, however, remains blank, waiting to be drawn day by day by its occupants.

El daruma es un amuleto japonés consistente en una figura de madera ovoide de grandes ojos carentes de pupilas que se vincula a la realización de una tarea. El ojo derecho se pinta al dar comienzo el proyecto, permaneciendo incompleto como recordatorio diario del intenso proceso necesario para concluir la labor, momento en el cual se dibuja el ojo izquierdo para completar la figura.
Este peculiar personaje, de algún modo, se transfiguró en el propio encargo: un solar achatado entre medianeras, de dimensiones reducidas (9,40 x 7,70 m), que se ubica en un entorno urbano de viviendas bajas unifamiliares aislado en cierta medida por la proximidad de las vías del tren en su paso por la capital hispalense.

Las condiciones de contorno de la propia parcela, sumadas a la inserción de varios elementos de carácter indispensable para el cliente (una piscina, una chimenea, un árbol, una terraza, una barbacoa, una doble cocina), derivó en una reinterpretación de las claves espaciales de la casa patio tradicional sevillana entremezclada con los conceptos de uso de la vivienda japonesa, que se reflejan en el lenguaje y funcionamiento interno de una arquitectura sencilla y a la vez altamente singular.

La casa, hermética y densa en su relación con el medio exterior, se desmadeja en su seno a través de un patio lateral que permite generar una nueva fachada interior orientada a sur y ordena las estancias a su alrededor así como la secuencia de actividades desarrolladas a lo largo de cada una de ellas.
La planta baja se fragmenta en su acceso permitiendo registrar toda la profundidad del solar ya en el zaguán de entrada, todavía a la intemperie, desde el cual se ingresa al primer gran espacio de la vivienda, el salón-cocina que, a su vez, se extiende de vuelta hacia el patio a través de amplias carpinterías practicables de vidrio.

Adosada al perímetro de la vivienda se sitúa la escalera concebida como único pasillo del hogar, que libera el resto de las estancias haciéndolas fluidas y permeables y, asimismo, actúa a modo de colchón físico entre los espacios de uso, las viviendas medianeras y la calle. También es un elemento modulador de la luz que, desde el lucernario situado en cubierta, recorre todos los niveles del inmueble hasta alcanzar el salón de planta baja.
El volumen construido se enrosca a ambos lados del vacío central en planta primera, conformando los espacios servidores del dormitorio principal: un aseo diáfano de grandes proporciones en la crujía de fachada, y una zona de almacenamiento y vestidor en el fondo del domicilio.

La ubicación de estos ámbitos en el nivel intermedio facilita a su vez la generación de las áreas exteriores del ático, consistentes en una reducida terraza posterior y una azotea en fachada de mayores proporciones, en la que se sitúan la piscina, la zona de barbacoa y el espacio de estar vinculado al interior de la vivienda. De esta forma, la sala de invitados, provista de un pequeño aseo y una cocina accesoria, es capaz de transformarse en un espacio flexible que se dilata y apropia de la azotea adyacente mediante una carpintería de vidrio corrediza que, al abrirse, queda oculta en toda su extensión.

El uso de materiales continuos y neutros en suelo y paredes contrasta con los techos de bovedillas vistas, los muebles de madera de abedul adosados a la escalera y los chapados de aluminio negro en las carpinterías de vidrio, elementos que confieren carácter y dinamismo a los espacios sin restar importancia al predominio de la luz y a la transparencia visual y física del edificio. Todo ello bajo la premisa de una habitabilidad modesta, informal y flexible de la cual la arquitectura planteada ha pretendido ser contenedora e inductora.
Su ojo izquierdo, no obstante, aún permanece en blanco a la espera de ser esbozado, día a día, por sus ocupantes.
