Converted Barn House | Objekt Architecten
Family Home in Dilbeek Dilbeek / Belgium / 2017
The barn house offers a good balance between the client's request for a new building and preservation of the old barn. Only the outer walls of the barn are conserved. A new concrete volume is placed inside the existing boundaries of the barn. An intermediate building, in the same architectural style, makes the connection between the existing house and the adjacent barn.
This contrast between old and new is also reflected in a structural concept. The existing walls of the barn are no more than the protective layer of the new construction. A concrete wall is poured against the existing brickwork. This new concrete wall forms the supporting structure for the prefab skeleton construction on top of it.The insulation shell on the first floor is thus placed on the inside, so that it could be completely filled with glass, which ultimately leads to a reduction in building materials and finishing.
