Housing and Ateliers in Rue Polonceau | YUA studio d’architecture

The project consists on the transformation of an ancient metal workshop in the ground floor and basement of a housing building in Paris into living units. The main goal was to find the right typologies to transform the lower parts of the building into pleasant housing and to densify a building by the bottom and not, like it is often the case, by the upper part.

To get this, the core of this area has been emptied to generate a void, a patio, which increases the possibility of openings, promotes social relations among their users and the presence of greenery. Three living units, from which one includes an architectural office, are designed to take advantage of their specific position inside the building.

The first apartment takes profit of the lower level of the courtyard and its main living spaces are organized in U shape around it. Through high and large openings, the inhabitants benefit of luminosity and crossed views between each part of the apartment.

The architectural office, with an independent entrance, is placed in the upper level, connected by an open staircase which is, at the same time, leading to a rooftop terrace.

The second apartment is located between the street and the courtyard. Its design ensures the transparency between those two façades.

The third one is a multi-oriented, L shape plan unit, developed in several levels with two terraces taking benefit of long views towards inner block vegetation.

All the openings, views and sections of the terraces are made to ensure maximum light and intimacy to each inhabitant.

The construction work has been developed in the very constraining site of the existing building. A puzzle has been generated to adapt the existing levels of the common staircase and the existing concrete structure with the constructive elements for the new apartments, improving the environmental impact of the project. New and existing structure cohabitates.

The materials of the project are presented in their raw aspects: oak, corten steel, birch plywood, concrete and terrazzo are used on walls and floors. In some cases, those surfaces have continuity between interior and exterior spaces to erase their limits and to promote exterior livability linked with the presence of vegetation.

Le projet consiste en la transformation d’un ancien atelier de métallerie, situé au rez-de-chaussée et sous-sol d’un bâtiment de logements, en unités d’habitation. Les enjeux principaux ont été de trouver les bonnes typologies pour transformer les parties enterrées du bâtiment en logements agréables, et de densifier un bâtiment par le bas et non, comme c’est souvent le cas, par le haut.

Pour y parvenir, un vide a été créé au cœur de l’ancien atelier, un patio, qui augmente les possibilités d’ouverture, favorise les relations sociales entre les habitants et introduit la présence du végétal. Trois unités de vie, dont une comprend une agence d’architecture, sont conçues pour tirer parti de leur position spécifique à l’intérieur du bâtiment.

Le premier appartement, situé de plain-pied avec le patio, organise autour de celui-ci ses espaces de vie en forme de U. Grâce des ouvertures hautes et larges, les habitants bénéficient de lumière naturelle en abondance, et de vues croisées entre chaque partie de l’appartement.

L’agence d’architecture, avec entrée indépendante, est située au niveau le plus haut, reliée par un escalier ouvert qui conduit également à une toiture terrasse.

Le second appartement s’étend entre la rue et la cour. Sa conception garantit la transparence entre ces deux façades.

Le troisième est multi-orienté, en forme de L, et se développe sur plusieurs niveaux, avec deux terrasses profitant des vues vers la végétation de la cour.

Toutes les ouvertures, vues et profils des terrasses sont conçus pour garantir le maximum d’arrivée de lumière naturelle tout en préservant l’intimité de chacun des habitants.

Le chantier s’est déroulé dans le cadre très contraint du lieu. Les espaces de chaque logement sont imbriqués les uns avec les autres afin de pouvoir s’adapter aux niveaux existants des parties communes, et de pouvoir réutiliser la structure en béton existante, minimisant ainsi l’impact environnemental de l’opération. Les nouvelles structures cohabitent avec les anciennes.

Les matériaux utilisés dans le projet sont conservés dans leur aspect brut : chêne, acier corten, contreplaqué de bouleau, béton brut et terrazzo sont utilisés pour les murs et les sols. La continuité entre espaces intérieurs et extérieurs est recherchée, notamment en termes de matérialité, afin d’effacer les limites de la façade, et de traiter les espaces extérieurs comme des espaces habitables en relation avec la présence de la végétation.

El proyecto consiste en la transformación de un antiguo taller de metal, situado en la planta baja y sótano de un edificio plurifamiliar, en viviendas y talleres. El principal reto del proyecto ha sido definir las tipologías de vivienda adecuadas para transformar las partes enterradas del edificio en espacios agradables, y densificar así un edificio por la cota inferior y no, como es habitual, por el tejado.

Para conseguirlo, se genera un vacío en el centro del antiguo taller, un patio que aumenta las posibilidades de aperturas, favorece las relaciones sociales entre los vecinos e introduce la presencia de la vegetación. Tres unidades de vivienda, una de los cuales tiene como anexo un taller y un estudio de arquitectura, se han concebido para aprovechar al máximo su posición específica dentro del conjunto.

La primera vivienda, situada en el nivel inferior, se apropia y se organiza alrededor del patio en forma de U. Gracias a la dimensión de sus grandes ventanales, sus habitantes disfrutan de luz natural y de visiones cruzadas entre las distintas partes de la vivienda. El estudio de arquitectura, con una entrada independiente, se sitúa en el nivel superior, vinculado con una escalera abierta que permite, al mismo tiempo, el acceso a una terraza en la cubierta.

La segunda vivienda se extiende entre la calle y el patio. El diseño de las divisiones interiores garantiza la transparencia entre estas dos fachadas.

La tercera unidad, con múltiples orientaciones, se desarrolla en forma de L y en distintos niveles, con dos terrazas que permiten aprovechar de las vistas hacia la vegetación y el patio.

La posición de las ventanas y la sección de las terrazas son concebidas para garantizar al máximo la entrada de luz natural manteniendo la intimidad de cada habitante.

La obra tuvo que adaptarse a las condiciones de restricción impuestas por el contexto. Los espacios de cada unidad de vivienda se encajan los unos con los otros para poder adaptarse a los forjados y niveles existentes de la parte común del edificio, y poder reutilizar la estructura de hormigón armado presente, con el fin de minimizar el impacto ambiental de la operación. Las nuevas estructuras conviven con las antiguas.

Los materiales utilizados en el proyecto se presentan en su aspecto bruto: roble, acero corten, contrachapado de abedul, hormigón armado y terrazo son utilizados en muros y pavimentos. Se busca la continuidad entre espacios interiores y exteriores, también a través de la materialidad, para hacer desaparecer los límites de la fachada y tratar los espacios exteriores como espacios habitables acompañados por la vegetación.
