"The new Sara Hildén Art Museum is located in the historic industrial area of Finlayson
with the utmost respect for the architectural and environmental pre-existing structures,
in the same way a ship docks in its port, delicately inserting itself in the historical context.
A project with a simple and essential design, collected and introverted as evidence of its great role, but at the same time a project open to the city. A building that does not want to be just a museum, but an urban symbol.
The strategic position of the museum entrance interprets the particular nodal condition of Via Finlayson, redefining the space in front of it to a new role as a small urban living room, a small square, where sculptures of your choice can be installed or small outdoor cultural events can be held. The atrium of the museum, from which the paths to the various functions branch off, mediates between the external and internal space assuming the value of a covered courtyard. The atrium, the true heart of the museum, acts as an extension and extension of the external public space, visible in transparency, putting itself in visual relationship with the Wilhelm von Nottbeck Park. The Museum is organized on three levels in elevation and an underground floor for the systems, warehouse and civil protection area.
The ground floor houses the main reception functions for the public (hall, ticket office, shop, caffee, multipurpose room, archive, and more) as well as the technical museum functions. The second level and the third level house the exhibition halls of different sizes and heights as required. The dimensions of the exhibition spaces vary between 100 m2 and 200 m2, guaranteeing maximum flexibility for the preparation of exhibitions.
The exhibition spaces are all rectangular in shape and have straight walls with no direct natural light. For the museum systems (heating and cooling)
we propose to exploit the geothermal energy of the subsoil with vertical geothermal probes.
The materials designed to ensure minimum maintenance for the museum are ecological cements..."
