On June 18, 2019, Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin opened the Irina Viner-Usmanova Gymnastics Palace in Luzhniki. The unique shape of the roof, reminiscent of the swing of a gymnastic ribbon, gives the building a unique, memorable look. The use of BIM technologies made it possible to determine the optimal shape of the roof and design such a complex object in a short time.

The architectural concept was developed by Russian architects from Creative Production Union PRIDE. The head of the design team was Chief Architect of Moscow Sergey Kuznetsov. Engineering and design solutions were developed by the Metropolis company.

"The gymnastics palace has a complex and at the same time very "speaking' shape, which looks interesting from any angle. So, from a technical point of view, this is a rather complex object: there are large roof spans, high ceilings and an extremely original roof design. The architectural part of the project was fully completed in ARCHICAD. This made it possible to avoid multiple adjustments to the project, since all sections were qualitatively synchronized, which positively affected the optimization of construction costs. The Gymnastics Palace is an excellent example of how advanced software allows a large team of specialists to work effectively, to quickly move from the first sketch to a full-fledged model," said Sergey Kuznetsov.

The pencil sketches were recreated in ARCHICAD as a 3D model, with the help of which further elaboration of ideas was carried out, suitable forms were clarified. The architects went to the construction site with a tablet into which a 3D model was loaded, which made it possible to promptly agree with the general designer (Mosinzhproekt AO) the changes to be made.

Earlier, the project of the Palace of Gymnastics won the BIM Technologies 2016 competition in the BIM Project: Sports Venues nomination and is a successful Russian example of the OPEN BIM approach in design. In addition, this year the Palace graced the cover of the ARCHICAD 23 program itself. In the near future, information modeling technology should become a useful and convenient tool not only for designers, but also for experts.
