We won a special prize at the design competition for the new building of the Vienna crematorium, together with the Austrian Who Cares design office.

Applications were invited to extend the existing premises of the cemetery in Vienna with a new building, as there was a growing demand for a cremation ceremony in front of the public. The original building is going to be completed with the newly designed wing. Ideal applications found the unity between the existing and the new building, while this latter met the demands of a modern era in function and symbolism.

The ceremony level of the new building can be reached through the passageways on either side of the existing sanctuary. Through the connecting wings, we arrive at the “Space of Thought” built around the outer atrium space. The “Farewell Souls”, the venue for the ceremony, connects nature and interior with large glass walls. As the large interior glass surfaces dissolve the infinite nature, the surface of the exterior cladding “transforms”: the color and structure of the existing building become infinitely reflective lending a contemporary look to the new facility.
