Live Merano Camping | Harry Thaler

The new LIVE Merano Camping is located in Meran / Untermais near the well-known horse racing course and was reopened in September 2020 after a fundamental structural renovation. The 4-star campsite has 91 spacious pitches on 15,000 m², each of which is around 80 m² in size. The Merano interior and product designer Harry Thaler is responsible for the modern, high-quality design. He was commissioned by the tenants of the luxury campsite to give the area a contemporary yet distinctive character. Both the topic of sustainability and the cooperation with local materials and craftsmen should be taken up and put into focus. The result is a completely plastic-free campsite that has dedicated itself through and through to environmental and climate protection.

In the middle of the city and yet embedded in nature. Large green spaces and imposing trees stretch across the entire campsite and dominate the site. The spacious green of the complex is only broken up by a few buildings, which are stylishly and yet unobtrusively integrated into the natural surroundings. The basic architectural concept comes from the Merano architect Andrea Fregoni. The elongated, one-storey building cubes used with care accommodate the reception and sanitary facilities as well as a café and a heated outdoor pool with loungers and SPA area (sauna, steam bath and changing rooms). The predominant colors are black and white, the materials used are local wood and glass. The simplicity of the architecture is intentional, it should not distract from the surrounding panorama of the Merano mountains.

A curious detail: most of the floor of the plant consists of 95 percent reddish Möltner porphyry and five percent cement. The combination is a successful experiment, specially developed for the infrastructure of the campsite. The procurement of the soil means that the water does not accumulate on the surface, but instead seeps directly into the soil, which in turn contributes to further vitalising the ecosystem below. The local natural stone used in the floor is perfect for exterior design and is reflected in the “Tschögglberg” ridge that is clearly visible from the campsite. 

If you were to look at the LIVE Merano Camping area from a bird's eye view, you would see a clear and symmetrical line of building cubes arranged parallel to one another. The café with terrace and lounge area is centrally located. The glass building cube is encased by a core of lamellas and functions both as a connecting link and as a separating element between the heated outdoor pool with lounging area and the adjoining SPA area and the catering area. In between, a grid of locally poured concrete slabs was laid. The 1 meter by 2 meter panels were not tailored to the architecture of their surroundings, but instead laid by Harry Thaler according to feeling. The result is an uncomplicated and unstructured floor covering, the light color of which forms a harmonious contrast to the facades of the buildings clad with black slats. As a visual eye-catcher, tall ornamental grasses were planted between the café and the outdoor pool, which are intended to convey and emphasize the proximity to the water and for this reason are taken up again in the entire area of ​​the complex. For the campsite, Harry Thaler has also devised individual seating options distributed around the site, made from the wood of the trees that had to be felled on the site for safety reasons.For the bar inside the café, Thaler was inspired by the gastro design of the 1950s and 60s. The room is kept simple, the Pressed Chairs designed by Harry Thaler and produced by Nils Holger Moormann offer colorful accents. The sanitary facilities with a total of 24 self-contained bathrooms are located parallel to the café. Each room is equipped with a sink, shower and toilet and gives the guest the feeling of having a private bathroom.

The lighting concept of the campsite is also well thought out. The challenge here was to generate as little light smog as possible and still create a nice and relaxed atmosphere. Therefore, the use of lanterns was completely avoided. Around 60 outdoor lamps dot the area. Some of them were specially designed by Harry Thaler for LIVE Merano Camping and have recently also been in production at the northern Italian company Olev Light. Additional light is provided by a large tree in the center of the facility, which is subtly illuminated by individual spotlights. The light is absorbed by the leaves and reflected, the tree turns into the only "lantern" on the square after sunset.

Il nuovo LIVE Merano Camping si trova a Merano/Maia Bassa vicino al famoso ippodromo ed è stato riaperto nel settembre 2020 dopo una ristrutturazione radicale.

Su 15000 m², il campeggio a 4 stelle offre 91 spaziose piazzole, ciascuna di circa 80 m².

Harry Thaler, interior e product designer di Merano è l'autore del design moderno e di alta qualità. L’incarico affidatogli dai proprietari del campeggio di lusso è stato di dare all'area un carattere contemporaneo ma distintivo. Il tema della sostenibilità, l’uso dei materiali locali e la collaborazione con gli artigiani del luogo dovevano essere erano da mettere al centro della scena. Il risultato è un campeggio del tutto privo di plastica e determinatamente impegnato nella protezione dell'ambiente e del clima.

Il campeggio si trova mezzo alla città, eppure è immerso nella natura. Grandi aree verdi e alberi imponenti si estendono su tutto il campeggio e dominano il terreno. La spaziosa vegetazione del sito è interrotta solo da edifici isolati, che si fondono con stile e discrezione nella natura circostante. Il concetto architettonico di base è stato sviluppato dall'architetto meranese Andrea Fregoni. I cubi dell'edificio a un piano singolo e di forma allungata, accuratamente inseriti, ospitano la reception e i servizi igienici, nonché una caffetteria e una piscina esterna riscaldata con solarium e SPA (sauna, bagno turco e spogliatoi). I colori predominanti sono bianco e nero, i materiali utilizzati sono legno e vetro locali. La semplicità dell'architettura è intenzionale, non deve distrarre dal panorama circostante delle montagne di Merano.

Un dettaglio curioso: la maggior parte del pavimento del complesso è composto per il 95% da porfido di Meltina rossastro e per il 5% da cemento. La combinazione è un esperimento di successo, sviluppato appositamente per l'infrastruttura del campeggio. Il suolo fa sì che l'acqua non si accumuli in superficie, ma penetri direttamente nel terreno, il che a sua volta aiuta a rivitalizzare ulteriormente l'ecosistema sottostante. La pietra naturale locale utilizzata nel terreno si adatta perfettamente al design esterno e si riflette nella cresta del "Tschögglberg", che è chiaramente visibile dal campeggio.

Se si guardasse l'area del LIVE Merano Camping da una prospettiva a volo d'uccello, si vedrebbe una linea chiara e simmetrica di cubi di edifici disposti parallelamente l'uno all'altro. In posizione centrale si trova la caffetteria con terrazza e area lounge. Il cubo di vetro dell'edificio è racchiuso da un nucleo di lamelle e funziona sia come collegamento che come elemento di separazione tra la piscina esterna riscaldata con area per prendere il sole e area SPA adiacente e l'area gastronomica. In mezzo, è stata posata una griglia di lastre di cemento gettato in loco. Le lastre di 1 metro per 2 metri non sono state tagliate per adattarsi all'architettura dell'ambiente circostante, ma sono state disposte da Harry Thaler a sentimento. Il risultato è un pavimento semplice e non strutturato, il cui colore chiaro forma un contrasto armonioso con le facciate degli edifici, che sono rivestite con doghe nere. Come eye-catcher visivo, alte erbe ornamentali sono state piantate tra il caffè e la piscina esterna per trasmettere ed enfatizzare la vicinanza all'acqua e per questo motivo sono ripetute in tutto il complesso. Per il campeggio, Harry ha anche progettato aree di seduta individuali sparse per il sito, realizzate con il legno degli alberi che hanno dovuto essere abbattuti sul posto per motivi di sicurezza.

Per il bancone all'interno del caffè, Thaler si è ispirato al design gastronomico degli anni '50 e '60. La stanza è mantenuta semplice, con accenti colorati forniti dalle Pressed Chairs sempre disegnate da Harry Thaler e prodotte da Nils Holger Moormann. Parallelamente alla caffetteria ci sono i servizi igienici con un totale di 24 bagni autonomi. Ogni camera è dotata di lavandino, doccia e WC, dando agli ospiti la sensazione di avere il proprio bagno privato.

Anche il concetto di illuminazione del campeggio è stato sapientemente pensato. La sfida qui era quella di creare inquinamento luminoso possibile e ottenere comunque un'atmosfera carismatica e rilassata. Quindi, l'uso delle lanterne è stato completamente eliminato, sostituendole con circa 60 lampade da esterni che punteggiano il sito. Alcuni di essi sono stati disegnati da Harry Thaler specialmente per il LIVE Merano Camping e sono stati recentemente messi in produzione dall'azienda italiana Olev Light. Un'ulteriore luce è fornita da un grande albero al centro del sito, che è discretamente illuminato da singoli faretti. La luce viene assorbita e riflessa dalle foglie, trasformando l'albero nell'unica "lanterna" del sito dopo il tramonto.
