The goal of the competition was to define a public space highly related to the peculiar qualities of the Pigneto district, in Rome, with such an iconic characterization to make it able to become a founding symbol for the future development of the area.

Concept The starting image: the old rows of maritime pine trees that gave the name to the Pigneto block. By continuing on the direction suggested by this historical image, we based our proposal on the artificial treating of Nature. And by operating on this basic image with materials taken from the place’s background we defined a highly artifact gathering place. The reference image to create a symbol: the maritime pine tree.

The district’s texture makes it more smiliar to a town than to a peripherical suburb of Rome, thus we decided to create a public space more similar to a courtyard than to an urban square. The necessity of a protection, on the sides of the Piazza that face the railroad, made it useful to create enclosure walls. We took advantage of these walls which, while permeable to the eye, suggests a more intimate space: an urban room.

The most iconic elements of our proposal, the Photovoltaic Maritime Pine Trees, they satisfy the needing of environmental awareness of this intervention. They are built with low-tech materials, ideally from reuse materials that can be largely found in the surrounding landscape. The pylons along the rail, road lighting poles and even bicycles share the cylindrical shape and metallic material.

A ‘simple complexity‘ is obtained by rearranging basic elements, modular and made of a few parts that are always the same, and requiring a few assembly techniques. Moreover the ‘branches’ of the photovoltaic trees, designed not to hinder each other frome the sunlight, they add a feature which is more than symbolic: they provide a wide photovoltaic surface useful to support the lighting of the square.

Lighting is the more elaborate achievement of this simple-complexity organization of the elements. The unique atmosphere of this lighting is intended to become the key-point of the crowded nightlife of the District, while ensuring the necessary illumination for usability and security of the area.

The low-tech resulting image, seemingly a collage of old technologies which are analogically re-arranged yo achieve efficiency and functionality, it aims to integrate without discontinuity in the imaginary and vision of the District, with all its daily activities and initiatives that animates it and make it a special place, at human scale.
