“How should one give answer to a wide unique view that is shaped by nature and culture, industry and tranquility?” This was the commission that architect Carmine Van der Linden & Thomas Geldof had to deal with when they were asked to design the interior for a two- leveled exclusive apartment at the Belgian coast surrounded by fields, dunes and a harbor.

A balance between natural, rich, noble and industrial materials was found in the thorough choice of the materials and finishes with an eye on innovation and tactility. A timeless and lasting interior was realized with a young and fresh sense of design.

To provide an immediate unconscious sense of silence and serenity on the scale of instinct and acoustic the architects chose to work with a clay finish for walls and ceilings.

The texture and palette of a wet sand beach used for the terrazzo floors blends in a harmonious way with the stained birch wood paneling because of the subtile use of granulates in a similar color tone. The color choice of the wood subtly brings in the seaweed color from the adjacent sea and the marram grasses in the surrounding dunes. The rhythm and refined finish of these cabinets are found throughout the different rooms in the apartment.

The richness of white tones and various textures in the bedrooms is reflected in the refined detailing and material choice. This language continues in the bathrooms where simplicity, purism and softness are complemented by the power of a unique solid natural stone element.

A fresh tone was played with the use of a few particular galvanized elements, which are better known in industrial applications. One of these elements is the prominently placed spiral staircase that not only connects the two levels aside a collections of cherished objects, but also offers this open space a monumentality. With its extremely logical and pragmatic construction method, this object stands as a ‘pièce unique’ in the open living space.

Werken met ambachten.
“Hoe een antwoord te bieden aan een weids uitzicht dat natuur en cultuur, industrie en rust met elkaar vermengt?” Dat was de vraag waarmee architecten Carmine Van der Linden & Thomas Geldof werden geconfronteerd bij de inrichting van een exclusief duplex- appartement aan de Belgische kust met zicht op polders, duinen en de zeehaven.

Bij de doorgedreven keuze van de afwerkingsmaterialen werd bewust gebalanceerd tussen natuurlijke, rijkelijke en edele, maar evenzeer industriële materialen en afwerkingen met oog voor vernieuwing en tactiliteit. Op een jonge en frisse manier werd een tijdloos en duurzaam interieur gerealiseerd.

Om gevoelsmatig en akoestisch een onbewuste rust te bieden binnen het geheel werd gewerkt met een ambachtelijke leem afwerking voor wanden en plafonds.

In de vloeren vermengt de textuur en het palet van een nat zandstrand als terrazzo zich harmonieus met het gebeitst berkenhout door gebruik van granulaten in gelijkaardige kleurtinten. De kleurkeuze van de meubelwanden brengt op subtiele wijze de wierkleur uit de zee en de helmgrassen in de nabije duinen naar binnen. Het ritme en de verfijnde afwerking van dit ingebouwde meubelwerk keert steeds weer terug doorheen de verschillende vertrekken in het appartement.

Een rijkdom aan witte tinten en verscheidene texturen in de slaapkamers worden weerkaatst in een opnieuw geraffineerde detaillering en materiaalkeuze. Deze lijn werd doorgetrokken in de badkamers waar eenvoud, purisme en zachtheid aangevuld worden met de kracht van een schilderachtig massief natuursteen element.

Met enkele uitgesproken gegalvaniseerde elementen, beter gekend binnen industriële toepassingen, werd een frisse noot bespeeld. Een van deze elementen is de prominent geplaatste wenteltrap die niet enkel twee etages met elkaar verbindt langs een verzameling van gekoesterde objecten, maar tevens aan deze open ruimte een monumentaliteit verleent. Met zijn uiterst logische en pragmatische constructiewijze staat dit object als een piece unique in de open woonruimte.
