A new healthy working environment Bristol / United Kingdom / 2019

In 2016, the charity bought a 1960s office building in central Bristol as a new home.

The spaces were designed and fitted-out in line with principles of healthy working. The design centres around food, bringing staff together at a shared refectory on the ground floor. This sits at the heart of the building, doubling as a seminar and events area, as well as display space. A striking plywood structure is used to show the work of the charity and forms a focal point.

Sustainability is core. Local and sustainable materials were specified, along with non-polluting paint. Furniture is from the Opendesk system to minimise waste. Planting is integrated to enhance air quality and define areas. Recycled carpets were chosen to mirror natural patterns and give teams a unique identity.

The Practice worked to enhance natural ventilation, daylighting and thermal comfort. The layouts optimise cross ventilation, and ceilings were removed to open up the space and utilise thermal mass for cooling. Lighting was reconfigured with low energy LED lamps and smart controls. All staff enjoy natural daylight and views out.
