Chungking Noodles Restaurant in Berlin | Rhizomet Studio

Chungking Noodles is a restaurant located in Berlin Kreuzberg. The design aims to give space to this emerging food concept, based on noodles and Sichuan pepper.

The central idea behind the layout is based on the concept of A-Box-in-a-Box. At the heart of it all is the Kitchen – as the main point of interest and the essential core to the restaurant – it is set at the entrance, acting as a connection between the exterior and interior. It’s placement provides the best exposure to the people passing by, at the same time a great entertainment for the costumers indulging in their meal By placing the kitchen as the center piece of the restaurant, it communicates the pure importance of the food itself.

The moment clients steps in, they will travel next to the kitchen – for a few seconds they will watch a sequence shot of the kitchen life, before taking their place at the table. Once they are seated in the open spaced dining area, the kitchen is perceived as a volume inside it.

The overall materials combines the industrial attitude of the city – juxtaposing the roughness of the neighbourhood with the more refined and self-indulgent taste which Ash has introduced to the gastronomy scene of Berlin.

Therefore on the roughly plastered grey walls we laid the glossy tiles, where the colour scheme is meant to slightly emulate the colour scheme of the ingredients – like the important element of the noodles themselves. The red tiles of the bar, the pink grouts and the creme tiles of the wall are tuned to the tones of the beer label, which is especially brewed and dedicated to ChungKing Noodles.

The positioning of the benches along the the walls to the tables and stools speaks a sleek and geometrical design with the warm feel of wood, while the lighting is designed to give a warm comfortable light to the tables and a clear illumination at the working surfaces.
