Castelnau-le-Lez is a town located near Montpellier in the South of France which enjoys a very mild Mediterranean climate. The new Prado Concorde development on the edge of the Lez river and at the entry to the town combines collective housing with school facilities and shops in a vast urban island surrounding a garden shaped like a valley. The accommodation architecture systematically gives pride of place to the external extensions of the dwellings so that residents can make the most of the advantages of the climate. A genuine outdoor room increases the habitability of each dwelling, a living space where everyone has their own tree providing shade at meal times. To achieve this objective, the project exploits an innovative concept of a large balcony whose triangular geometry with variable cross-section takes up the efforts through cantilevers in line with the tree container built into its thickest part. This highperformance prefabricated concrete component is systematically offset between floors to allow enough air for each tree to grow. The advantages of these balconies go beyond their practical use; the play between their offsets and inversions and the combination of triangular prisms floating one above the other bring movement and lightness to the façade like a flight of birds.

Le nouveau quartier de Prado Concorde à Castelnau-le-Lez, implanté en bordure de la rivière, le Lez et à l’entrée de la ville, associe des logements collectifs à des équipements scolaires des commerces, et des bureaux dans un vaste îlot urbain regroupé autour d’un jardin en forme de vallée. Ce projet privilégie une mixité programmatique, social et générationnelle. 

L’architecture des habitations fait systématiquement la part belle aux prolongements extérieurs des logements pour permettre aux habitants de profiter des avantages du climat.

Une véritable pièce supplémentaire extérieur de 15m2 apporte à chaque logement une habitabilité augmentée, un lieu de vie où chacun dispose de son propre arbre à l’abri duquel il peut, entre autres, prendre ses repas. 

Pour atteindre cet objectif le projet exploite un concept innovant d’un vaste balcon dont la géométrie triangulaire à section variable permet de reprendre les efforts par des consoles au droit du bac à arbre intégré dans sa partie la plus épaisse. Cet élément préfabriqué en caisson d’acier est systématiquement décalé d’un étage à l’autre pour laisser le tirant d’air nécessaire à la croissance de chaque arbre. 

Au-delà de l’intérêt de ces balcons en termes d’usage, le jeu de leurs décalages et de leurs inversions, la combinaison de prismes triangulaires flottant les uns au-dessus des autres, apportent à la façade mouvement et légèreté à l’instar d’un envol d’oiseaux.
