The project originates as a response to the typical vertical housing project based on balconies as house extensions. Instead of using such narrow and ineffective extensions, the project ‘folds’ them inwards into private patios. This strategy results in a series of vertical patio houses, which play with different degrees of intimacy through patios and towards the exterior through the latticework on the façade.

The apartments, which could also be seen as vertical houses, are intertwined both in plan and section in order to achieve the best natural lighting and privacy between them.  This produces a group of individual houses, each one completely different from the other, unified by the series of private patios, the main entrance corridor and the concrete block that covers the building entirely.

The concrete block façade works as a veil or skin that covers and unifies the whole building, turning into latticework to bind the interior and the exterior without compromising intimacy. The main entrance corridor, reminiscent of mexicanvecindades, creates an interaction area between the inhabitants of the building. Finally, the different patios work as the traditional courtyard house, where all the activity occurs around them, rather than towards the street, resulting into intimate and introspective homes.
