The Interior Architecture / Design firm – elenakarouladesign.architecture – was asked to design the unification of the top two floors of a 1950’s listed apartment building located opposite the medieval walls and overlooking the old Venetian Town of Nicosia in Cyprus.

The Duplex consists of the day zone which with its long stretches of full-height sliding transparent glazed openings, forms almost invisible boundaries between the indoors and outdoors.

The wavy, breeze like bands that shape the false ceiling, make a decisive impression that the sky is entering the apartment’s interior and vice versa. The volume of the wall structure that houses the utility areas, separates the main lounge space as it “sinks” into the lower level through the carefully placed staircase and emphasizes the merging of one level into the other.

The staircase operates as the element unifying the two levels along with the glazed flooring on the top level which allows the viewing of the staircase landing below, thus providing further strengthening of the two levels unification.

The lower level houses the master suite along with two more smaller guest suites, all in total privacy. The layout of the design unfolds via two functional levels, each clearly a unit in itself, yet nonetheless    part of a coherent whole. The different surfaces and materials complemented by rigorous geometric volumes, balance harmoniously between natural and theatrical expressions hence creating an intriguing atmosphere which can transport you towards the surrounding horizon!

Immersed in the luminous natural setting, the interior design purposefully allows the maximum  of the surrounding skyline and light to become one with the interior space enchasing the owner’s lifestyle and their love for the house’s artworks.
