CONCEPTUAL APPROACH TO THE PROJECT

The masterplan of Chaux-de-Fonds is a sample of perfect urban design, We used like a reference this background and the historical development to develop our concept. The plot of the ground is showing a rectangular base that is typical of the master plan of the city. Trough that you can recognise the city and keep this system is necessary to save the identity of Chaux-de-Fonds in the new urban extension. The new residence development is the natural border between the urban decay and the green strong forest, and became for us a perfect connection between urban space and natural one. We call it “Borderwood”. We translate this target in the new development, carrying on the design idea, and that is clear in the master plan draw. The project site has a definite border, the Esplanade system on West, the border of the forest on East, the railway on South and his parallelism on the North. Those elements are a rectangular border aligned with the Chaux-de-Fonds urban system. We finalize the project to build residential buildings. The new residence are situated in a natural border site, respect the centre of the city, between an urban area and an natural space: the forest. Exactly this difference in the area give us the opportunity to follow a straight way, under architectonic aspect, for a result that keep in relation the forest and the building in the meantime. A new development able to live in harmony with the nearest, like a metamorphosis that keep the rational concept of the Esplanade and take out from the forest the fundamental materials: wood; ancestry material that was ever and will be in strict relationship with the humans, became his recover space, became his home. The relation with the urban context born from the Esplanade urban system, bringing his principal pedestrian axe in the new development, carrying on the walking way that till now have the end in the forest. The new residential block, that follow the Esplanade’s linear system, are broken from a perpendicular axe (that follow the Rue de la Pâquerette) are situated parallel to the railway. This axe give us the solution to link the pedestrian way between the different quotes. The site, indeed, is in a regular degree and give us different troubleshoot, for the people fruition and the building orientation as well. The rays of the sun, in the first hours in the morning, give light only to the block located in the south. The shadow of that block are projected on the rest of the block in the Nord. We solve that problem with a slope in the vertical walls on the South and North side, in this way we take more natural light on the facade and give more view space to the flats and public space as well. While the public space is open forward the sky, the private space became more independent and take a pyramidal shape. The project is in the relation between the build space and open space, is in the habitat space that would like give more important to the value of the live together. Our decision to divide the volume in three linear blocks, that block follow the landscape slope, give us the possibility to create new space. The typical system of the project change only to follow the landscape slope, The entire site give a global image that put itself in relationship with the town master plan and the near green. A first view of the extern facade give a unique image, where, in lower level, big curtain wall introduce in to the commercial space. That is able to create a strong relation between out and in side, create a contrast between the light basement for public use, and the heavy flats of the upper level: residential space; We can recognise the residential space through the wood skin, where in a free composition are installed cellular panels. We draw in the facade big opening that create empty space in the continuous wood skin, and realize light and shadow games. We take like refer Le Curbusier and his architecture, his methodology is visible in the new project; we put some of the famous Le Courbusier point like roof garden that from the top appear hidden and a carry on in the landscape. You have access to the roof garden from the duplex flats on the top of the block. The access for any apartment come from pedestrian space that are between the blocks. The cores entrance are recognised because are empty space in the linear of the curtain walls. The car way is in the underground level, where we put parking space. The site, indeed, is completely forbidden to cars, but will be possible arrive in any space from the underground circulation system. Also, the access to the site will be possible from the creation of a new train station. The site visitors can use this way as well. A pedestrian bridge, in a strategic position, give the possibility to cross the rail way.

PROJECT ISSUES RAISED BY THE THEME OF EUROPAN 10 AND THE SPECIFIC SITE THEME

The new residential area, at the different scales, was thought like a solution of all the general Europan 10 iusee and this particular site, and all the request and problem that Chaux-de-Fonds define in his report. The project show us modern situation and keep rules that the architecture save between the centuries. Europan take care about the “Urbanity” concept, put in evidence the necessity to create space linked with the landscape and the environment; the project, in the middle between urban design and architecture, is an expression of a strategy linked with the urban system of Chaux-de=Fonds, and develop in a modern urban and design process concept. That concept are the rule of the town master plane. The project put those new building with the same proportion and on the same axes of the existent and nearest one. It is linked to the environment with the colour and material of the landscape, with a slope wood facade that recall typical Chalet of a mountain landscape. Urbanity is also the design of public spaces, think to guarantee the max usability of the space, more strong linking between pedestrian and cars way. Open new link between existent way. The project provide also to insert a new rail station, with the same architectural language of the new site, and in this way help to link long trip from and to the town. In the respect of the urban necessity, inside the new residential site, there is a strong architectural and use connection between public and private space. Through all the project we fill a strong dynamism: walking through the building we have the sensation to cross a private space, that is the result of the wood skin. The slope f the wall have a duplex value: from a side take distance from the public space, and give more view space in this way there is more light and air; from the other side is near the residential apartment, and give a care sensation and save the privacy. An other point of the Europan issue is the residential house. The project give a solution to put together the direct link to the town, thanks to the more connection lines and relative services, and the development of the new site, with the add of commercial, institutional and public space, and also with the introduction of different kind of apartment like duplex or four bed apartment. This solution is in accord with the logic of Chaux-the-Fonds. “Sustainability is a duty that born from the responsibility of everyone respect the connection of all the word”. In this way is write in the rule of Europan 10. The project action keep in mind this concept and put it in practice through natural materials and technological innovations that need to set the environmental system in all the new residential site. The roof garden give a natural refresh in all the spaces in the summer period and to the first hours in the morning. The wood is an external protection to the building and keep inside the hot temperature as well. In all the South facade will be installed solar panels and photovoltaic system, in a composition the will be nice to see. The rain water will be collected for use in the apartment grey water system. The Chaux-de-Fonds site is part of the colonization argument. The project is a really new one residential area to live, respect and save. That is what the Chaux-de-Fonds plan asked, and the conception of this study give us the opportunity to live it in a 360° view. At the Europan question: In an urban extension, like we can do to use a new sustainability philosophy of the use of the territory? Yes, we answer, we take in exam the nearest site of the Esplanade (under the aspect of life, space organization, public and private, and keep in consideration what’s happened and what is the reason of importance of this site) also with a design simple and sustainable.

THE PROGRAMME CHOSEN AND ITS CONNECTION WITH THE PROGRAMMATIC FRAMEWORK PROPOSED ON THE SITE

For the development of this project We start fixing few strong point, in details in our design we take care of this issue: The city of “La Chaux‐de‐Fonds” is a candidate for World Heritage cities of UNESCO; The city is famous for its prestigious watch and jewel industries; it is also the city where “Le Corbusier” was born and where he realized his first works. The site of the Cornes‐Morel is located in the East of the City, the urban structure of the Chaux‐de‐Fonds has the great advantage: the clean limits of the built areas and the close relationship between city and nature. Safeguarding and enhancing this exceptional urban structure has been an integral part of our development. We identify a strong guiding principles for the end of the city. For first we study the existent urban axes to connect in a visible way the Cornes‐Morel with the existing urban fabric and more precisely with its centre. In the meantime that we realize a new residential area we thought how was possible create a new district that involves social issues, how create a mix between inhabitants and proper use of public spaces, how create public infrastructures and new potential retail activities. We identify in our development two important criteria: comfort and habitability. Single or multi family housing in the form of clustered habitats, in harmony with its neighbour the Esplanade concept. This typology will also be a way to retain mixed functions in the surrounding urban fabric. We proposed the layout and the shape of the openings will have to take altitude into account with “mountain” climatic conditions. We solve the sustainable issue proposing the use of solar panels and recycle of the grey water.
