Cm house - slow release "stube" in handmade ceramic tiles coverings is located in a rehabilitation project of a residential building, about 30 km north of the city of Milan in a countryside area.

The intervention concerns the creation of a new roof floor and the restructuring of two existing floors, with an energy efficiency, since the existing building was lacking in quality and built with a low insulation index.

For that the external walls was covered by a thermally-insulating coating and the interior spaces have been revolutionized generating open spaces positioned around the new element of the stove, star-shaped and covered with precious hand-made majolica by Sicilian artisans, according to an ancient tradition, but in a contemporary line of work. The goal is to create a real “heart” of the home, a place to gather around the “hearth”. The intervention is a contemporary reinterpretation of a system that plans to produce heat with a very limited amount of wood (approximately 5 kilos) that are managed to heat the entire house for the whole day.

It is from the heritage of Tyrolean historical stube that we have drawn this one with the aim to be able to convey the concept of beauty, of warmth and efficiency.

The use of the “Tyrolean stube” comes from an ancient tradition that dates back to the late 13th century in all the countries of the Alpine arc and adjacent valleys, until they developed widely in the following centuries. The only heated room in the whole house, completely covered in wood in many cases finely carved, was dominated by a large tiled stube that represented its vital center.

Subsequent technical innovations, such as a more rational channeling of fumes and the application of earthenware to the walls, increased the efficiency of combustion and the radiant surface of the Tyrolean stube.

The secret of high efficiency wood stoves is the internal flue gas system made by refractory material, in order to obtain the highest heat-accumulation capacity: the hot smokes of combustion cross the flue gas system and transfer their thermal energy to its surface. This energy is then released very slowly and gradually in the room by radiation.
The heat-accumulation produced by the flue gas system lasts up to 12 hours from the last wood loading.
The external part of heat-accumulation stoves is entirely coated by ceramic tiles. That’s fundamental because is a material with a natural heat-accumulation capacity that absorbs heat during combustion and releases it slowly and gradually.
Tiled surface reaches only low temperatures, making these stoves very comfortable in the space.

The stove divides the three main day areas: the kitchen, the living room and the tea room.

Its shape alludes to the idea of hugging people in a cozy and familiar environment, while on the back is the area dedicated toTV watching. The heat is released on all the walls of the stove.
