Sports hall Schlossberg

In the community of Stephanskirchen, the school gymnasium, which was too small and in need of renovation, was replaced by a new building. The new sports hall was built on almost the same site and now offers sufficient space for sports lessons at the directly adjacent primary school and for the sports club.
The hall is accessed via the covered forecourt, which is created by a recess on the ground floor. This forms the access for the students as well as the entrance for public use. On the ground floor there are side rooms, the changing rooms and the sports area. The gymnastics room and the spectator gallery on the upper floor can be reached via the stairs or the elevator.
From the spectator gallery, visitors have a view over the entire playing area and the extraordinary ceiling construction. Lighting design and acoustics were particularly important in the planning of the ceiling. In addition to the important static construction, the light guidance via the 28 light domes is particularly significant, as these together with the light bands in the façade illuminate the entire playing field.
The roof structure above the 15 x 27 m sports area consists of a grid of laminated beams with a grid of approx. 3.85 x 3.85 m. Asymmetrical, pyramid-shaped light shafts were inserted into these fields to conceal the board layer beams behind them. The angles of the light wells vary in each case; there are a total of four types that can be combined with each other. The cladding of the truncated pyramids was made of plasterboard, for acoustic reasons they are partially perforated. These surfaces are also asymmetrically arranged, which further enhances the visual appeal of the arrangement. The composition is completed by ball-proof luminaires flush with the upper end of the light wells, which provide the necessary artificial light. The modulation results in an exciting ceiling soffit, but also ensures that the playing field is evenly illuminated.
