OMA / Jason Long and San Francisco-based Y.A. Studio have been selected to design an affordable housing project in the historic Haight Ashbury neighborhood of San Francisco. The approximately 38,000 SF site will become home to more than 150 deeply affordable units and provide a high-quality living environment for families and seniors. The project is a joint development between the Chinatown Community Development Center (CCDC) and the Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Corporation (TNDC).
Located in the Upper Haight neighborhood of San Francisco, 730 Stanyan is situated at the entry to Golden Gate Park at the terminus of the eclectic commercial corridor of Haight Street and the distinctive residential streets of Haight Ashbury. The 100% affordable rental housing program is part of a larger effort to address the city’s desperate need for permanent housing options with the ambition to provide affordability with a sense of comfort and the feeling of independence and dignity.
OMA Partner Jason Long said, “San Francisco faces one of the worst housing crises in the country—an unsustainable situation that not only contributes to homelessness but also perpetuates and exacerbates economic and racial inequality. This project will create over 150 homes for families and seniors who might otherwise be pushed out of the city. Haight-Ashbury became famous as a place for the community to gather, convene and mobilize, and this project will honor that history.”
Taking advantage of the site’s prominence and adjacency to the park, the building will provide a new community hub for the neighborhood at the ground floor in addition to the affordable housing units above. As an extension of the Haight Street retail corridor, the ground-floor will incorporate commercial areas that will service the surrounding neighborhood and the residents of the building. A portion of the ground floor will be dedicated to socially and culturally relevant programs, representing the diversity of the city as well as the neighborhood.
OMA Associate Chris Yoon commented, “we look forward to working closely with the Chinatown Community Development Center and the Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Corporation along with the many stakeholders who are deeply invested in this site. Partnering again with Y.A. Studio in this new and dynamic context, at both local and larger scales, we aim to create a safe and welcoming asset for the community that is truly embedded in this diverse neighborhood and city.”
“It will be great for our studios to collaborate once again,” says Paul Wang, Associate at Y.A. studio. “Our firms complement each other well and working with both Chinatown CDC and TNDC on this unique site promises to yield results that will not only serve under-served members of the community but will also inspire diverse resident and business groups to come together to create a vibrant cultural and community hub.”
OMA and YA Studio have previously collaborated with the Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Corporation on the firm’s first residential project in San Francisco, a mixed affordable, rental and condo building in Rincon Hill. 730 Stanyan will be OMA’s first 100% affordable housing residential building in California.
