RP House is a flat located in the historic centre of Forlì. The building was built in 1879-1880 in an area which was taken up by the old slaughterhouse and partly by an urban garden. The complex, subjected to a restorative intervention, was transformed into a residential system composed by terraced houses. There are few elements which have remained from the old building such as the monumental wooden portal, which is the main entrance to the inner courtyard, and the exposed wooden beams inside every single flat.

The project consists of a complete redesign of the interior space due to the unattractive and non-functional space distribution of the existing flat. This proposal is developed through the composition of antinomic elements.

The ground floor houses a double-height living room, a kitchen, a dining room and facilities for the guests, while the upper floor consists of two bedrooms with bathroom. The main architectural element of this project is the staircase. These stairs are not just a simple object that links ground and first floor, but they are designed as a volume that determinates the identity of the living area. They are composed of three parts. The stairs are declined as a double-height bookcase nearby the wide window of the living room, creating a warm and small reading area. This bookcase is a filter between the entrance and all the other spaces on the ground floor, so that privacy is guaranteed. The short side of the stairs’ volume creates a sort of background for tv area, while the basement is a small wardrobe. The whole space of the house is transformed through one element made of white lacquered wood and natural oak.
