Renaissance Square
San Juan / Puerto Rico / 2019
Master-planned and designed by Alvarez-Diaz & Villalon (AD&V), Renaissance Square is a new mixed-income residential community in Puerto Rico.
Located in the heart of the San Juan business district, Renaissance Square is the first of three mixed-income public housing projects on the island developed by McCormack Barron Salazar. The 7-acre site comprises 140 newly constructed homes, including walk-up apartments and townhouses.
Renaissance Square respects and reinforces the neighborhood’s existing historic character, with the buildings designed to human scale and based on classical European lines that are rooted in the island’s history.
Moving beyond the parameters of affordable housing, the property incorporates amenities and site improvements associated with market-rate developments, including walking trails, playgrounds, fitness centers, community gardens, landscaping, site lighting, and controlled parking and building access.
Sustainability played a key part in planning and building Renaissance Square, from strategic design (which maximizes natural light and cross ventilation), to multiple green features such as photovoltaic panels, Energy-Star appliances, energy-conserving systems, and environmentally friendly building materials.
