The first high-end boutique hotel to open in the city for over a decade, San Francisco Proper Hotel features 131 rooms and suites in various configurations; meeting and event spaces; gymnasium; highly anticipated restaurants and a rooftop lounge; all designed by international tastemaker Kelly Wearstler.

The Building

A witness to the changing fortunes of the Mid-Market area, San Francisco Proper has lived many lives and is currently listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

- 1904 - San Franciscan architect Albert Pissis designed the Callaghan building, which was destroyed in the 1906 earthquake and fire.
- 1907 - Its fragments were reconstructed as a two-story office building.
- 1926 - H.A. Minton added five more stories and the building became the Hotel Shaw.
- 2013 - Following a rotation of name changes in the '80s, the hotel was purchased by The Kor Group.
- 2017 - After 4 years of work, the hotel reopens as San Francisco Proper Hotel.

Interior Design

The interiors reflect the building’s rich history and San Francisco’s culture today. Design elements include:
- A historic lobby restored by local artisans, who employed centuries-old techniques, features Corinthian columns, intricate elevator doors and white/gray marble floors as period details.
- Infusions of French and European pre-modernism and Cubism.
- Found vintage furniture and Kelly Wearstler-designed furniture.
- Custom-designed Kelly Wearstler wallcoverings in guest rooms based on vintage designs with geometric and floral patterns indifferent scales and textures.

- Local artwork from Bay Area artists, Jonathan Anzalone and Joseph Ferriso.
