Consisting of 16 regional areas, Kayseri as a province covers an area of 16,917 km2. It borders with cities Niğde, Kahramanmaraş, Yozgat, Adana, Sivas and Nevşehir.

Even though the layout of the city reaches over a very big area, city center remains relevantly small compared to the complete province. As we will mention below, these towns and regions still have their own central locations and almost function like smaller cities within a bigger one. 

Due to the extreme size of the city, in this study we will focus on the area which we can call the “central city “ for it’s contents and urban structure will be of our interest.

After we study the figure ground maps of this central area we will take a closer look into Byzantian Castle and the Grand Bazaar. However, it’s important to mention these are not the only structures remained within the area before modern urbanization, there are also complex buildings, inn remains, religious structures, etc.
