ENG - Giorgia and Stefano Barbini have found their flagship in the heart of the Eternal City. A small balcony can be seen on the first floor of Palazzo Pamphili, along the façade of the Church of Sant’ Agnese in Agone. It directly overlooks Piazza Navona, known internationally for its Baroque fountain by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. This was the residence of Pope Innocent X; it was the hideaway where the pontiff held secret trysts with his sister-in-law, Gabrielle Olimpia Pamphili.

It is inside these storied walls that Giorgia and Stefano have created their third, spectacular lodge: Holy Deer San Lorenzo City Lodge. This 350-square-meter luxury apartment not only boasts a world-class setting but also a level of craftsmanship that transports the visitor into a world of wonders.

During the renovation and planning of the Holy Deer San Lorenzo City Lodge, Giorgia and Stefano Barbini have pooled their experience and expertise in order to create a place steeped in historical ambience where modernity and history go hand-in-hand.

The Holy Deer is a contemporary home immersed within a historical context. The meraviglia begins as you ascend to the first floor of Palazzo Pamphili. In juxtaposition to the natural assumption, one does not climb an imposing staircase. Rather, you follow a narrow walkway, a paved mule track, which links the different levels of the sumptuous apartment with the entryway. Borromini conceived it thus in order to allow Pope Innocent X to reach his apartments directly from the Vatican, astride a white donkey.

When you arrive at the City Lodge today, emerging from the dim light of the stairs, you first encounter only yourself: an oversized golden Baroque frame, of rare elegance, reflects the visitor's face in countless rectangles of burnished mirror. Everyday life is transformed into what we would define ante litteram as pixels; that which is ordinary recedes from view and allows a truly unique place to take center stage. We immediately find ourselves in an atmosphere that is somehow both staggering and relaxing.

A long corridor girds the entrance, winding both right and left. The Holy Deer is in fact laid out in the shape of a horseshoe. At the two extremes, cleverly tucked away, are the two bedrooms with adjoining baths. One bedroom overlooks the romantic Via dell'Anima and leads into an elegant walk-in closet; the other, the sumptuous Pope's Room, looks directly onto Piazza Navona. When you open the doors of the windows, which measure an astonishing four and a half meters in height, in order to access the balcony that overlooks the square, the spectacle takes your breath away: it’s easy to imagine exactly how popes, princes and noble mistresses felt standing here. From this perspective, the sublime style of the Baroque period becomes surprisingly palpable.

The two secluded rooms are linked to one another through a study, music room, library, lounge for conversing or watching TV, dining room and kitchen. Conceived as a place to gather together and socialize, each of these spaces has been meticulously designed to help guests enjoy the intimacy of a private retreat to the fullest, and to indulge in creative idleness.

The muted grey tones of the walls lend a sense of calm to the ambience, steadying the soaring heights, which range up to five meters, and parrying with the optical effects of the frescoes that further accentuate the scale. Giorgia and Stefano Barbini found themselves in immediate concord with FM Interior Architects, and the fruit of that collaboration is clearly visible in a masterfully selected palate of colors: hues of grey attenuate the gold and purple-red, evoking the pontiff’s power and passions. Here the sacred and the secular merge, complimenting each other in perfect symbiosis.

The individual spaces adjoin through open doors, unified by white and gilded stuccos, a grey terracotta floor, double-leaf doors and sumptuous frescoes; the volumes fuse, seemingly paving the way towards infinity. That which is monumental and that which is personal meld at Holy Deer, creating a space of rare beauty and intimacy. Its welcoming embrace is infused with such kindness and informality that entering feels more like a homecoming than an arrival.

The structure’s Baroque frescoes are also different from most of their contemporaries, which typically depicted saints and biblical scenes. The Palazzo Pamphili frescoes are an example of mythological iconography. The one illustrating the impossible love between the ill-fated Dido, queen of Carthage, and the Trojan prince Ene is particularly splendid and representative: the successive scenes on the ceiling of the Pope's Room evoke the passion of the two lovers.

The room’s color palette is grounded in the opulence of red-purple gold, expertly muted by hues of gray which are, in turn, enhanced by the luminescent wood of the footboard and wardrobe doors. Here, brass has been melted directly onto old wood trunks from South Tyrol using a secret procedure. Giorgio Paolini, who holds the patent for this process, created the fusion for the Pope’s Room personally. The result is dazzling: wood and metal fused together in a halo of opaque brilliance, a harmonious blend of old and new. Every detail of Holy Deer San Lorenzo City Lodge tells a story. A story that Stefano loves to tell his guests.

But when crossing the threshold of the lodge, perhaps the most wonderful thing is to savor the showiness of the Baroque, simply giving in to emotions evoked by dimension, color and materials; in short, let yourself be catapulted into the splendor of the age.

ITA - Direttamente affacciato su Piazza Navona, nota in tutto il mondo per la fontana barocca di Gian Lorenzo Bernini, in corrispondenza del primo piano di Palazzo Pamphili, sulla facciata della Chiesa di Sant’ Agnese in Agone si scorge un balconcino. Era la dimora di Papa Innocenzo X, il luogo dove il pontefice incontrava la cognata Olimpia Pamphili, sua amante. Tra queste mura Giorgia e Stefano Barbini hanno realizzato il terzo San Lorenzo Lodges: l’ “Holy Deer San Lorenzo City Lodge”, un appartamento di lusso in una cornice dalla classe straordinaria, 350 metri quadri di stile e abilità artistica all’interno del quale lo stupore non si esaurisce mai.

Tra le mura possenti del loro “Holy Deer San Lorenzo City Lodge” di Piazza Navona ci si sente protagonisti della storia immensa della città eterna. Affacciarsi dal balcone della “stanza del papa”, posare l’occhio sul passeggio serale, sui passanti rapiti dalla bellezza della Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi di Gian Lorenzo Bernini, significa percepire il tempo in una nuova dimensione.

Nel restauro e nella progettazione Giorgia e Stefano Barbini hanno attinto alla loro esperienza e competenza realizzando un ambiente in cui la storia incontra l’epoca moderna e si fonde ad essa in una straordinaria simbiosi.

L’ “Holy Deer” è una dimora contemporanea immersa in un contesto storico. Lo stupore inizia salendo al primo piano di Palazzo Pamphili. Contrariamente a come potremmo immaginare, non si sale una scala imponente. È piuttosto uno stretto camminamento, una mulattiera lastricata che collega tra loro i diversi piani fino all’ingresso del sontuoso appartamento. Borromini lo aveva concepito così per consentire a Papa Innocenzo X di spostarsi dal Vaticano e raggiungere direttamente i suoi appartamenti in sella a un asino bianco.

Oggi, l’ospite che dalla penombra delle scale arriva al “City Lodge”, incontra in un primo momento solo se stesso: una cornice dorata sovradimensionata del Barocco restituisce il volto del visitatore in innumerevoli rettangoli di specchio brunito. Scomposta in quelli che potremmo definire “pixel” ante litteram, la quotidianità si trasforma, scompare rendendo protagonista un luogo speciale permeato da un’atmosfera che stupisce e contemporaneamente rilassa.

Un lungo corridoio cinge l’ingresso snodandosi a destra e a sinistra. La pianta dell’ “Holy Deer” è a ferro di cavallo. Alle due estremità, in posizione defilata, si trovano le due camere da letto con stanza da bagno: una dà sulla romantica Via dell’Anima e sfocia in una elegante cabina armadio; l’altra, la sontuosa “stanza del papa” si affaccia direttamente su Piazza Navona. Aprendo i battenti delle finestre di quattro metri e mezzo per accedere al balconcino che dà sulla piazza, lo spettacolo è mozzafiato: da questo affaccio il sublime sapore del barocco diventa sorprendentemente palpabile.

Le due stanze appartate sono collegate tra loro da uno studio, una sala per la musica, una biblioteca, un lounge dove conversare o guardare la TV, una sala da pranzo e una cucina. Concepiti come luogo di incontro e socializzazione, ognuno di questi spazi è il contesto ideale per gustare l’intimità di un buen ritiro privato ed abbandonarsi all’ozio creativo.

A porte aperte, questi spazi comunicanti caratterizzati da stucchi bianchi e dorati, dal pavimento in cotto grigio, le porte a doppia anta e i sontuosi affreschi, si fondono aprendo una sorta di fuga prospettica verso l’infinito.

Il grandioso e il privato si amalgamano per dare vita ad uno spazio di rara bellezza ed intimità, dove l’ospite viene accolto con gentilezza e informalità sentendosi subito a casa.

Le tonalità tenui del grigio alle pareti conferisce aplomb agli ambienti caratterizzati da altezze che sfiorano i cinque metri e dagli effetti ottici degli affreschi che le accentuano ulteriormente. Nell’ambito della fruttuosa collaborazione con lo studio “FMarchitettura d’interni”, con cui da subito si è instaurata un’intesa perfetta, Giorgia e Stefano Barbini sono stati maestri nel giocare con le cromie: col grigio hanno attenuato l’oro e il rosso porpora, richiamo al potere e alle passioni del pontefice. Sacro e profano si fondono e si completano in una simbiosi perfetta.

Anche gli affreschi barocchi sono diversi da quelli tipici dell’epoca raffiguranti santi e scene bibliche. Quelli di Palazzo Pamphili sono un esempio di iconografia mitologica. Particolarmente grandioso e rappresentativo è quello che illustra l’amore impossibile tra la sfortunata Didone, regina di Cartagine, e il principe troiano Enea: sul soffitto della “stanza del papa” le scene si succedono rievocando la passione dei due amanti.

Per questa stanza Giorgia e Stefano Barbini hanno scelto una soluzione contemporanea con dettagli in ottone come richiamo allo splendore del passato. Il letto matrimoniale king size poggia su una pedana a due gradini di colore grigio. Senza essere il classico letto a baldacchino, viene cinto su due lati da sontuosi drappeggi in velluto: un inchino alla storia con un pizzico di ironia!

Nella palette cromatica della stanza, l’opulenza dell’oro del rosso porpora viene sapientemente attutita dai toni del grigio, a sua volta valorizzato dalla lucentezza del legno della pedana e delle ante dell’armadio: con un procedimento segreto l’ottone è stato fuso direttamente sui vecchi tronchi di legno dell’Alto Adige. Per la “stanza del papa”, Giorgio Paolini, ideatore di questo tipo di lavorazione protetta da brevetto, ha realizzato la fusione in prima persona. Il risultato è strabiliante: legno e metallo fusi tra loro in un alone di opaca brillantezza in una riuscita contaminazione tra antico e moderno.

Ogni dettaglio dell’ ”Holy Deer San Lorenzo City Lodge” racconta una storia. Varcando la soglia del lodge è possibile abbandonarsi alle emozioni evocate dalle dimensioni, dai colori e dai materiali, essere catapultati nello splendore e nei fasti dell’epoca.
