Filux Lab | Workshop: Diseño y Construcción

Filux Lab is the new art laboratory of the "International Festival of Lights Mexico - FILUX". It works as an independent space destined to consolidate the "sense of artistic community"; it serves as a meeting point between artists, experts and the public.

Filux Lab’s international program is based on experimentation, production, promotion and exhibition of cultural projects which take light and cinema as their starting point. In this way, it establishes itself as a global reference from Mexico to the world. 

Located in the city of Merida, Yucatan, the colonial house that contains Filux Lab represents a versatile space that works as a gallery, as a workshop and as a place of coexistence, camaraderie and research for artistic purposes. 

The ground floor has five rooms, which were part of the original structure of the house before the intervention. The pasta floor carpets of the first corridor are the originals. An edge of Antique White color mosaics joins the originals to the new flooring, which unites old and new flooring across the entirety of the space.  

The design of the laboratory enables it to adapt according to its intended use. All the elements that make up its architecture including floors, walls, ceilings, and doors can be used for artistic interventions. White and neutral colors came from this same need. 

No space within the laboratory has fixed lighting. All of the lamps that are used have a connector that can be plugged through electric extension cords from different points, allowing the space to evolve quickly depending on the dynamics each particular user requires. 

The back esplanade, with its more modern and bolt design, breaks with the traditional reading of the Yucatecan colonial architecture. It invites users to experiment with the high walls that are ideal for projections and that, thanks to the different moldings around the openings and the use of lattices in the walls, offer endless options to play with lighting. 

During the day, sunlight offers a spectacular geometric game between lights and shadows that are projected at different points of the building, and during the night the versatility of artificial lights allows users to create different luminous atmospheres. 

Serving as a blank canvas, essentially going “unnoticed”, to highlight the pieces of art in presentations and exhibitions, and, on the other hand, standing out and distinguishing when there is not art on the premises, allows the building to serve dual purposes. Filux Labs turns itself into a new work of art every time different forms of lighting are accommodated or used. 

The second floor has the administrative area that includes offices, a library with a collection focused mainly on light and two terraces, which are accessed via a spiral staircase that crowns the back facade of the building and elegantly highlights the esplanade as sculpture itself. 

When crossing the white doors of the facade, the known is left behind. The space invites all who enter to discover and create new sensory experiences in the universe of light, the universe of FILUX.

Filux Lab es el nuevo laboratorio de arte del "Festival Internacional de las Luces México - FILUX". Funciona como un espacio independiente destinado a consolidar el "sentido de comunidad artística", como un punto de encuentro entre artistas, expertos y el público.  

Su programa internacional está basado en la experimentación, producción, promoción y exhibición de proyectos culturales que toman como punto de partida la luz y el cine. De esta manera se consolida como un referente a nivel global de México para el mundo. 

Ubicada en la ciudad de Mérida, Yucatán la casona colonial que alberga Filux Lab representa un espacio versátil que funciona como galería, taller y como punto de convivencia e investigación con fines artísticos. 

 La planta baja cuenta con cinco salones, mismos que formaban parte de la estructura original de la casa antes de la intervención. Los tapetes de pisos de pasta de la primera crujía son los originales y se unen a los nuevos mediante un borde de mosaicos en color blanco antiguo, esto para unificar e integrar los pisos en todos los espacios. 

El laboratorio está diseñado de tal manera que pueda cambiar y adaptarse sencillamente y todos los elementos que conforman su arquitectura incluso pisos, plafones, y puertas pueden utilizarse para intervención de los artistas. Los colores blancos y neutros vienen de esta misma necesidad. 

Ningún espacio dentro del laboratorio cuenta con iluminación fija, todas las lámparas se pueden enchufar mediante extensiones a diferentes puntos para que el espacio pueda evolucionar rápidamente.  

La explanada trasera con un diseño más moderno y atrevido rompe con la lectura tradicional de la arquitectura colonial yucateca de la fachada principal y de los salones, invitando a los usuarios a experimentar con los muros altos, ideales para proyecciones y que gracias a las diferentes molduras que se encuentras alrededor de los vanos y al uso de celosías en los macizos, ofrecen un sinfín de opciones para jugar con la iluminación. 

Durante el día, la luz del sol ofrece un espectacular juego geométrico entre luces y sombras que se proyectan en diferentes puntos del edificio y durante la noche con la versatilidad de las luces artificiales se pueden crear diferentes atmósferas luminosas. 

El edificio tiene la dualidad de fungir como un lienzo en blanco y pasar desapercibido para resaltar las piezas y obras de arte en presentaciones y montajes y por otro lado destacar y distinguirse cuando no haya piezas exhibidas, convirtiéndose a sí mismo en una nueva obra de arte cada vez que se acomoden o utilicen diferentes formas de iluminación. 

La segunda planta cuenta con el área administrativa que incluye oficinas, una biblioteca con un acervo enfocado a la luz y dos terrazas de esparcimiento y se accede mediante una escalera en espiral que remata la fachada trasera del edificio y se desarrolla elegantemente como una misma escultura. 

Al atravesar las puertas blancas de la fachada, se deja atrás lo conocido, para descubrir y crear nuevas experiencias sensoriales adentrándose al universo de la luz, al universo Filux.
