“The theme or imaginary concept of the interior has become “under construction” or, in a more general sense, incompletion. This theme responds to the very nature of Freshlabels – the Czech company represents different brands and their selection and assortment is constantly evolving. The big challenge was the limited time and budget, and then the original state of the space. The previous store had a pretty frantic interior with fake bricks on the walls, which could not be demolished. Therefore, we were looking for something to cover the large areas while creating a flexible system for displaying the goods on the walls. This led me to the idea of using an ordinary plasterboard construction, but in a reverse way - the boards were used as the lower layer and in front of them supporting structures were placed that form a metal grid for the display of products. The common building materials in their raw state have a certain inherent poetics, the roughness of which fits well in the context of Berlin and its design scene. The cool metal grids on the walls are complemented by the furniture in the room made of raw MDF boards - which normally continue on to be veneered or lacquered, thus also carrying the notion of incompleteness. The main eye-catchers became the pink centre column at the front of the store and the cash register that is roughly wrapped with polystyrene to bring some softness to the interior. The next layer of the interior consists of mirrors, the game with reflections and vistas should once again support the impression of an unfinished space...”
