The project encompasses the comprehensive reform of a spacious apartment of 110 square meters located at the intersection of Aribau and Roselló streets, with façade to one of the characteristic chamfers of Cerdà’s Eixample in Barcelona. The new inhabitants, a couple of local creatives, presented some requirements that the existing state of the apartment, quite subdivided and outdated, did not meet, so all the interior partitions were demolished, but respecting the system of structural bays of load bearing walls parallel to the facade, something very characteristic of these chamfer blocks.

The project proposes a long front of oak wood, perpendicular to the façade, which houses the bedroom, the dressing room and the studio, as well as generous closets and support areas. This front serves as the interior façade, and three functional blocks are projected on it transversely. The outermost is the block of living areas, with a joint living room-dining room-kitchen. This block takes advantage of all the development of the façade of the chamfer, and reveals its entire length. Likewise, the wooden partition does not touch the façade, as it is interrupted giving way to large pivoting doors of lacquered wood with vertical strips of brass in contact with the wood, without frames, so that the entire facade can be understood in an uninterrupted, unitary way.

A block of bathrooms, storage and pantry is located on the other side of the existing structural wall. The main bathroom is designed as two spaces: a first one with a glazed and lacquered iron front, where the bathtub, the washbasin, and the boudoir area are located; and a second more private area with two cabins, one for the water closet and another one devoted to a huge shower space.
At the inner end of the apartment there is a third block with the guest bathroom and the room for the couple's cats.
The textures, materials and colors are dominated by the oak wood, which contrasts with a more serene palette of grays of concrete, microcement, or mass colored wooden boards. The flooring that remains behind the wooden front is a wooden one, also of oak, but of a lighter tone, these rooms being more domestic; while the rest of the interior flooring is made of continuous grey micro-mortar, shifting to pink in the master bathroom.

Granites, door handles and faucets made of brushed copper, pivoting wooden doors with brass inlays, glass with different textures ... add greater material richness in the form of subtle notes, also indicating the joints and transitions between materials.
As a carpet, or interior path, hydraulic hexagonal tiles recovered from the former flooring are arranged, covering the entire length of the chamfer façade, pointing out precisely the importance of the chamfer itself in the conceptual development of the proposal. This tiled path is also illuminated by long and narrow cylindrical lamps, highlighting this path by means of artificial lighting.
Finally, a swing was installed in the center of the chamfer, introducing a playful note much desired by the clients.

El proyecto abarca la reforma integral de un amplio apartamento de 110 metros cuadrados situado en el cruce de las calles Aribau y Roselló, con fachada a uno de los característicos chaflanes del Ensanche de Cerdà de Barcelona. Los nuevos clientes, una pareja de creativos locales, presentaban unos requerimientos que el estado existente del apartamento, muy subdividido y anticuado, no cumplía, por lo que se procedió al derribo de toda la tabiquería interior, pero respetando el sistema de crujías estructurales con muros de carga paralelos a fachada, algo muy característico de estos bloques en esquina.

La propuesta plantea un largo frente de madera de roble, perpendicular a la fachada,  que alberga las habitaciones, el vestidor y el estudio, así como generosos armarios y zonas de apoyo. Este frente hace las veces de fachada interior y sobre él se proyectan tres bloques de programa en sentido transversal. El más exterior es el bloque de zonas de estar, con una estancia conjunta de salón-comedor-cocina. Este bloque aprovecha todo el desarrollo de la fachada del chaflán, y revela toda la longitud del mismo. Así mismo, la partición de madera no toca las fachadas,  se interrumpe dando paso a grandes puertas pivotantes de madera lacada con franjas verticales de latón en contacto con la madera de roble, sin marcos, de manera que toda la fachada se puede entender de manera ininterrumpida y unitaria.

Al otro lado del muro de carga existente se emplaza un bloque de baños y almacenaje y despensa. El baño principal se plantea como dos salas: una primera con un frente acristalado y de hierro lacado, donde se hallan la bañera, el lavabo, y la zona de tocador; y una segunda zona más privada con dos cabinas para el inodoro y una generosa ducha.

En el extremo interior del apartamento se sitúa un tercer bloque con el baño de invitados y el cuarto para los gatos de la pareja.

Las texturas, materiales y colores están dominados por la madera de roble, que contrasta con una paleta más serena de grises de hormigón, microcemento, o tableros de fibras prensadas coloreados en masa. Los pavimentos que quedan detrás del frente de madera son de parquet flotante, igualmente de roble, pero de un tono más claro, siendo estas estancias más domésticas; mientras que el resto del pavimento interior será continúo de micromortero gris, cambiando a rosa en el baño principal.

Granitos naturales, tiradores de puertas y grifos de cobre cepillado, puertas de madera pivotantes con incrustaciones de latón, vidrios con distintas texturas…añaden mayor riqueza material en forma de sutiles apuntes al interior, indicando igualmente las juntas y transiciones entre materiales.

A modo de alfombra o de camino interior, se disponen unas baldosas hexagonales hidráulicas recuperadas del mismo piso, recorriendo toda la longitud de la fachada del chaflán, señalando precisamente la importancia del propio chaflán en el desarrollo conceptual de la propuesta. Este camino de baldosas está igualmente iluminado por luminarias cilíndricas alargadas y estrechas, puntualizando este camino con la iluminación artificial.

Por último, se instaló un columpio en el centro del chaflán, introduciendo un apunte lúdico muy deseado por los clientes.
