During the day, the grooved texture of the opaque diffuser camouflages itself against wall, as does its rectangular outline, which simply “disappears” into the background. In the evening, the Led lights reveal a translucent structure and emit a halo of light, creating the illusion that the lamp appears to float in space. The compactness and the high performance light source , united with utilization of light–weight materials, allowed for various functions and elements of a traditional lamp (diffuser, bulb) to be concentrated into a single object. The lamp presents new illumination techniques that respond to the recent politics of energy efficiency, namely Italian legislature passed in December 2006 (L. 27 december 2006 n. 296) which grants tax deductions for up to 36% of the costs sustained to implement efficient solutions; or more internationally the EU decree that in 2012 will definitively eliminate incandescent bulbs from the market. Ala, small and sleek, maintains the dimensions of a A4 sheet of paper (29,7 x 21 cm) with width of 2cm. The surfaces is s fixed to the wall by a chromed stainless steel stem with a rounded head, a form that allows users to move and rotate the rectangular surface in order to obtain the desired illumination: direct, indirect or diffused.
