The Maritime Museum project called for a symbolic building that reflects the local context of Abu Dhabi. The proposed building is composed as a rectangular volume from which a void is excavated in a form that echoes the shape of a ship’s sail swelling in the sea breeze. The sculptural building floats upon a plane of water and frames the magnificent seascape along the Saadiyat Island coast. Inside, the building contains a dynamic space that evokes the underside of a boat. Floors interconnected by slopes float at various levels within this cavernous interior to create an exciting spatial composition. The ground beneath the building is excavated in the inverted shape of the void above to create a large water tank. This water-filled exhibition space will offer visitors an opportunity to see the aquatic world from a unique underwater perspective.
