Riqualificazione del Waterfront di Catania | Park Associati

Park Associati, as head of the group (RPT) Park Associati Srl, Milan, Project Base Sarl, Paris,¸ MUVING Architettura Ingegneria Territorio S.r.l., Catania; Mobilityinchain Srl, Milano, COPRAT, Mantova, won the international competition for the requalification masterplan of the Waterfront in Catania.

The Project of the Waterfront of Catania has as its core the water as element and the renewed connection between the city and the sea.

Catania owes its origin and its fortune to the proximity of the sea and the mountain, which gave it relevance, identity and aggregation dimension. Over time, the boundary line between the sea and the historic center is blurred becoming a factor of risk more than resource for the community. This detachment was due mainly to the construction of two infrastructures: the railroad and the port, which created a border front between the sea and the life of the city.

The Masterplan redesigns the Waterfront for 4 km, creating a new landmark, making Catania a seaside city again, also thanks to the infrastructural project that provides for the landfill of the railway line in this section.

Putting water as a core of the project means to be well aware of the conditions that will insist on the life of coastal communities in the medium to long term. The attention to the themes of protection from natural cataclysm caused by the sea as the increasingly frequent floods that break down on the city has oriented the design assumptions.

To become the risks associated with water management, a resource of economy, beauty and renewed livability: this is the challenge we have set ourselves to imagine a new meeting place between the city and the sea.

Revealing the waterfront to the city means working on the margins and spaces of the break line. The requalification of the neighboring spaces to the site, and the creation of conviviality spaces, to walk, to make sport, to have fun, will allow to rediscover the urban continuity between sea and city.

RIQUALIFICAZIONE DEL WATERFRONT DI CATANIA 

I concorso per il masterplan di riqualificazione del Waterfront a Catania è stato vinto da Park Associati, a capo del gruppo (Rtp) Park Associati Srl, Milano , Consorzio stabile di ingegneria R1 s.c.a.r.l., San Giovanni la Punta ; Coprat società cooperativa, Mantova.

Il progetto del Waterfront di Catania ha come fulcro l’acqua e il rinnovato legame tra la città e il mare.

Catania deve la sua origine e la sua fortuna alla prossimità del mare e della montagna, che le hanno dato spessore, identità e dimensione aggregativa. Nel tempo, la linea di confine tra il mare e la città storica è sfumato diventando un fattore di rischio più che di risorsa per la comunità. Questo distacco è stato dovuto soprattutto alla costruzione di due infrastrutture: la ferrovia e il porto, che hanno creato un fronte di confine tra il mare e la vita della città

Il Masterplan ridisegna il Waterfront per 4 km, realizzando un nuovo landmark, rendendo Catania nuovamente una città di mare, anche grazie al progetto infrastrutturale che prevede l’interramento della linea ferroviaria in questo tratto. 

Mettere l’acqua al centro del progetto significa aver ben presente quali saranno le condizioni che insisteranno sulla vita delle comunità costiere a medio-lungo periodo. L’attenzione ai temi della protezione da cataclismi naturali provocati dal mare come dalle sempre più frequenti alluvioni che si abbattono sulla città ha orientato i presupposti progettuali.

Far diventare i rischi connessi alla gestione dell’acqua una risorsa di economia, bellezza, rinnovata vivibilità: questa la sfida che ci siamo posti nell’immaginare un nuovo luogo di incontro tra la città e il mare.

Rivelare il waterfront alla città significa lavorare sui margini e sugli spazi di cesura. La riqualificazione degli spazi limitrofi al sito, e la creazione di spazi di convivialità, per passeggiare, fare sport, divertirsi, permetterà di ritrovare la continuità urbana tra mare e città.
