The Israeli startup, JoyTunes, responsible for the development of an app that uses fun and engaging methods to teach children and adults alike to play piano, commissioned RDA to design their new office space in the heart of Tel Aviv. The concept for the space is based on bringing together a sense of freedom with a hard-working methodology of improvement, both of which help define the company’s approach to teaching music. The space was designed to reflect the revolutionary, yet basic approach that allows all to learn and play music, no matter who they are.

The primary challenge was creating a space that functioned for a group of employees coming from a wide range of disciplines. There was a demand to create a space that allowed for effective and dynamic connectivity as well as encouraging teamwork and communication across departments. The solution was to create a  prominent, custom-designed wooden stage at the center of the space. This area functions not only as a musical practice stage, but as a space that facilitates larger department and all company meetings and collaborations.

The stage is located directly beneath the building’s skylight to take advantage of the natural light that enters the space; creating a dramatic effect that resembles that of spotlights on a stage. The unique piece has quickly become the beating heart of the space, providing a physical platform for experimentation, collaboration and creation. The area surrounding the stage houses all departments, arranged in an open space setting, as well as  support spaces; the main kitchen, meeting rooms, phone booths and smaller hangouts.

The overall design, as well as the project’s material and color palette, are a combination of both industrial and natural materials giving both a technological as well as a warm and inviting feel to the space. The design reflects the nature of the company itself, drawing inspiration from the concept of constructing a strong foundation to provide the opportunity for upward growth and development.

Natural greenery and organic elements became a hugely important element in the space. It was important to the Roy David design team as well as the JoyTunes team to create a space that  embraced the industrial style of design to coordinate with the concept, but to also incorporate natural elements to create a balance in the space and encourage a healthy environment for their employees. Rather than installing a green wall, systems of wiring were created to allow natural elements to climb and grow and to eventually become an ever growing and evolving design element in the space.

To truly capture the vibrancy of the work that they do, Roy David Architecture created an expansive system for display surrounding the space’s central stage. The design team worked closely with the JoyTunes team to hand select elements and custom pieces that would represent their vibrant world and the inspiring work that they do.
