Dessier residence | naturehumaine [architecture+design]

Located in the Plateau-Mont-Royal borough, the transformation and expansion of this duplex into a single family home is defined by the geometrical dialogue of two complementary volumes highlighted by a set of angles and contrasting tonalities. 

At the rear, the addition of a mezzanine allowing access to the roof terrace is read as an extension of the facade, stretching over three levels. On the first floor, a second volume extends the footprint of the building, contributing to the formal expression as a whole. The volumetric composition is guided by the desire to create a dynamic expression between these two angular entities. In each volume, two large folded panes of glass provide a visual connection with the garden below.

Inside, monochrome spaces with subdued materials surround the staircase located at the heart of the household topped by a generous skylight. The central staircase made of openwork railings diffuses a zenithal light through the interior of the house. From the ground floor to the mezzanine, the staircase runs on three levels all the way to the family room giving access to the roof terrace. The interplay of volumes defines a close relationship between the living space and the roof terrace, which creates a space to contemplate the urban landscape.

Situé dans l’arrondissement du Plateau-Mont-Royal, la transformation de ce duplex en maison unifamiliale se définit par le dialogue de deux volumes complémentaires mis de l’avant par un jeu d’angles et une tonalité contrastée. 

À l’arrière, l’ajout d’une mezzanine donnant accès à un toit-terrasse se lit comme le prolongement de la façade qui s’élance sur trois niveaux. À l’étage, un deuxième volume prolonge l’empreinte du bâtiment contribuant à l’expression formelle de l’ensemble. La composition volumétrique est guidée par le désir de créer un discours dynamique entre ces deux nouvelles entités angulées. Sur chaque volume, deux pans de verre se replient sur les façades offrant un engagement visuel prédominant sur le jardin.

À l’intérieur, des espaces monochromes aux matérialités sobres enveloppent l’escalier situé au cœur de la maison surmontée d’un généreux puits de lumière. L’ascension se fait par un escalier aux garde-corps ajourés qui contribuent à diffuser la lumière zénithale à travers ce lien vertical. Du rez-de-chaussée à la mezzanine, l’escalier défile sur trois niveaux jusqu’au séjour familial qui donne accès à la terrasse en toiture. Le jeu des volumes définit une relation étroite entre l’espace séjour et le toit-terrasse qui devient un lieu contemplatif du paysage urbain.
