Macquarie Park / Australia / 2017
Architectus and Macquarie University imagined the C7A temporary fitout as a ‘Living Laboratory’; an opportunity to expand and challenge current paradigms for student and staff environments.
Incorporating the conversion of the original campus library and levels 3, 4 and 5, the temporary space is designed to accommodate 160 decanted staff and student groups.
User-configured agile desking, sensory pods and intuitive technologies for conditioning and lighting are some of the innovations that take occupants out of their comfort zone and create new and individualised ways of working and interacting. With diversity a key driver for informal zones, students can meet in open lounges, café style spaces, whimsically themed environments, workshop/brainstorm spaces, or completely private rooms. Meeting pods of coloured glass sit independently from the Brutalist building structure and invite tinted light into the space creating defined zones and wayfinding.
Built space has been avoided where possible with zones defined through the use of modular furniture and reusable ceiling panels, while vibrant colours offset the concrete backdrop of the Brutalist-era base building. Breakout spaces engulfed in plants, meeting rooms that recall a picnic, spaces saturated in colour, and the use of unexpected materials provide moments of surprise and relief from day-to-day tasks.
