Il recupero e la trasformazione di una antica “casa di famiglia”, ampliamento di una più piccola preesistenza avvenuto negli anni 60’, è stata l’occasione del progetto di un’abitazione per una giovane coppia. Il luogo: Enna, città con un centro storico ricco di contraddizioni, caratterizzato dall’intersezione tra vecchio e nuovo. L’edificio è stato in un primo momento analizzato con oggettività: esso appariva come una entità introversa e chiusa, scomponibile nei suoi elementi efficienti ma isolati. Un tutto costituito da parti non più funzionale alle esigenze espresse dai committenti. Ma la “casa” nella sua esistenza, nel tempo della vita delle persone che lì hanno abitato, ha sempre costituito un punto di riferimento, fisico, solido. Una casa a cui è legata una memoria.

Quindi le risposte progettuali sono state incentrate sulla questione riguardante il grado di flessibilità dell’edificio in rapporto alla conservazione dell’identità.

Come prima riflessione, la necessaria rimodulazione dei collegamenti verticali, è diventata occasione per ripensare gli spazi interni della casa, rendendoli idonei alle richieste della committenza, provocando così una rimodulazione della forma nelle sue condizioni costitutive endogene ed esogene. Scala che, per la sua posizione centrale rispetto allo sviluppo dell’abitazione, diventa il fulcro della casa e come tale viene trattata. Da semplice collegamento verticale, assorbe in se diverse funzioni: da libreria a dispensa, da elemento illuminante a filtro d’ombra, da elemento di compressione a elemento di dilatazione dello spazio. Un fulcro essenziale che regola la gerarchia degli spazi e della luce.

Quest’ultima inonda l’open space a piano terra grazie ad una grande apertura ottenuta sulla misura della doppia altezza del vano scala, diventa più filtrata e rarefatta al piano delle camere da letto per poi esplodere nell’ultimo livello, dove un necessario intervento strutturale sulle coperture ha permesso di raccogliere l’illuminazione anche zenitale. Qui lo sfogo all’esterno lascia senza fiato: una vista del Castello di Lombardia da una parte, e la Torre di Federico dall’altra, così vicina da sembrare quasi di poterla toccare.

Legno e ferro diventano i protagonisti di questo sviluppo verticale: il parapetto in ferro, con il suo corrimano che come una linea continua percorre l’intero sviluppo; il legno dei gradini, che diventa occasione per definire e nascondere utili spazi di servizio, fino a trasformarsi con continuità nel rivestimento del volume del bagno (illuminato e arieggiato grazie all’installazione di un tunnel solare a tetto che attraversa i due livelli superiori), e nella parete attrezzata.

L’assetto complessivo della casa risponde ad una visione contemporanea degli spazi: a piano terra la parte “pubblica” della casa, uno spazio flessibile all’interno del quale navigano il volume della scala e del bagno; al primo livello la parte più “privata”, la zona notte; all’ultimo livello, uno spazio living che accoglie una zona relax ed una zona per passare del tempo da condividere con gli amici.

All’esterno il volume, che mantiene la forma originaria, è caratterizzato da un sistema di oscuranti scorrevoli che cambiano di continuo la facciata in un gioco mutevole di pieni e vuoti. Sul prospetto laterale, che si affaccia sullo stretto vicolo, la realizzazione di un bow window a struttura tubolare, nata per alloggiare delle tende, diventa occasione per rimodulare e mettere a sistema la nuova grande apertura verticale sulla scala con le aperture e i balconi esistenti.

L’edificio così riacquista anche la sua identità all’interno della struttura urbana del quartiere. 
 

The recovery and transformation of an ancient "family home", an extension of a smaller pre-existing building in the 60s, was the occasion of the project of a home for a young couple. The place: Enna, a city with a historic center full of contradictions, characterized by the intersection of old and new. The building was analyzed: it appeared as an introverted and closed entity, decomposable into its efficient but isolated elements. A whole made up of parts no longer functional to the needs expressed by the clients. But the "home" in its existence, in the time of the life of the people who lived there, has always been a solid, physical point of reference. A house with a memory.

So the design responses were focused on the degree of flexibility of the building in relation to the preservation of identity.

First, the remodulation of vertical connections has become an opportunity to redesign the interior spaces, thus creating a reformulation of the form in its endogenous and exogenous constitutive conditions. The stairs, due to their central position with respect to the development of the house, become the fulcrum of the house. It is not a simple vertical connection, it contains different functions: from a bookcase to a pantry, from a lighting element to a shadow filter, from a compression element to an element of space expansion. An essential fulcrum that regulates the hierarchy of spaces and light.

The light is present with great intensity in the open space on the ground floor thanks to a large opening on the double height of the stairs, it becomes more filtered and rarefied on the bedroom floor and then explodes on the last level, where a necessary structural intervention on the roofs allowed to collect even zenithal illumination. Here the outdoor space is beautiful: a view of the Castle of Lombardy on one side, and the Tower of Federico on the other, so close that it seems to be able to touch it.

Wood and iron become the protagonists of this vertical development: the iron parapet, with its handrail that runs along the entire development like a continuous line; the wood of the steps, which becomes an opportunity to define and hide useful service spaces, up to continually transforming into the bathroom volume (lighted and aired thanks to the installation of a roof solar tunnel that crosses the two upper levels), and in the equipped wall.

The overall layout of the house responds to a contemporary view of the spaces: on the ground floor the "public" part of the house, a flexible space in which the volume of the staircase and the bathroom navigate; on the first level the more "private" part, the sleeping area; at the last level, a living space with a relaxation area and an area to spend time with friends.

Outside, the volume, which retains its original shape, is characterized by a system of sliding blinds that constantly change the façade into a changing game of full and empty spaces. On the side elevation, which relates to the narrow alley, the construction of a bow window with a tubular structure, created to house curtains, becomes an opportunity to remodulate and systemize the new large vertical opening on the staircase with the existing openings and balconies.

The building also regains its identity within the urban structure of the neighborhood.
