The competion for the revitalization of historic centre of Samarkand, promoted by the Aga Khan's Foundation for Islamic Art , interested the ancient city of Uzbekistan, formerly capital of Tamerlano's Empire, and promised to recovere and return to its role as historical and cultural capital, a decayed and severely compromised urban complex after the incorporation of the Uzbekistan in the Soviet Union.
The proposal, intitled "The Citadel of Twentieth Century", intended to affirm the functional and formal continuity of designed structures with the existing and valuable architectures produced by the best period in the history of that city.
