Horn of Plenty Installation - Arno Coenen, Iris Roskam "In Rotterdam they call it the 16th chappel of Rotterdam. I see how people relate the 2, large epic art of one building that actually is a cathedral and one thet seems to resemble one. If the markthal is a contemporary cathedral the it is typical that it is one of food. Hence the artwork seems to say something about our relation to food, the enviromnet and the condition of the planet. You could just look at the wonderfull almost psychedelic picture for it's beauty but the refence to the horn of plenty might as well point out the miracle that all that food is there for you. It is a work with a spiritual religiuous feel to it. By epicness of that what is shown, the larger then life size of it, but it is not a tale of religion. It's about nature in the scientific way, more an ode to Stephen Hawking's atheist way of looking at the origin of life. The whole sche is one 3d world that has a centre of perspective right in the middle of the roof where is al arge lensflare caused by the son, the real source of life on earth. The perspective is of one laying in the grass lokking up, surrounde by grass barley litle insects etc. all the fruit and food is falling from the sky, from the source, the sun. When the work is completed in october, there will be a huge uktra HD videoprojection right in that lensflare, which is a white surface which will function as a projection screen. The video will be masked out to complete the printed background. It will show a cosmic vortex of food resembling the milky way, slowly rotating and food raining down on the spectator. Every day when the video is started it will staup mimicing the big bang, from nothing through a chaotic fase stabilising in the cosmic food vortex : the horn of plenty. Like religious tales of creation you might wonder what is real and not and queation your rol in thisi world of semmingly plentyness, cause we all now that this is getting under more and more stress, so why not have a cahthedral like place with a work of art that resembles heavenly art in churches to celebrate that all that welath is still there." Marinus de Ruiter : sparringspartner Michiel van Iperen,Frank aan de Stegge, : 3-d modeling and rendering Dustin Kershaw, : NUKE specialist (post production) produced by:Mothership : Faye Ellen en Mathijs Goorhuis An arch of 228 apartments, of which 102 for rent, will create a large hall which houses 100 market stalls, shops and restaurants, 1200 parking spaces and an underground super market. The apartments will all have a balcony on the outside and a window to the inside of the market. Insulation will prevent any unwanted effects. The 40 meter tall and wide opening of the front and back will be covered with a flexible suspended glass façade, allowing for maximum transparency and a minimum of structure. The interior of the arch will display market produce. The project with a total of 100.000 m2 is set to be completed in 2014 and part of the current regeneration of Rotterdam’s post war centre. At the place where Rotterdam was founded, near the historic Laurens church, the Market Hall will be realized as a new urban typology. The Market Hall is a sustainable combination of food, leisure, living and parking. Fully integrated to enhance and use the synergetic possibilities of the different functions, a public building emerging from housing.
