Stamba Hotel | Adjara arch group

Stamba Hotel is the latest achievement of Adjara Group, which is a leading Georgian company in hospitality and lifestyle development. The group has gained worldwide recognition for trend-setting establishments and innovative entrepreneurial projects, through developing and managing the first Georgian lifestyle brand Rooms Hotels in Kazbegi and Tbilisi - both members of Design Hotels.

Housed in the same 20th century landmark building of the former publishing house as Rooms Hotel Tbilisi, Stamba Hotel - also a member of Design Hotels - continues in the same spirit of urban conversion, design aesthetics and commitment to local culture.

The international success of Rooms Hotel Kazbegi (opened in 2012) and Tbilisi (opened in 2014) with an average of 85% occupancy rates has predetermined the commercial viability of Stamba Hotel, which since its opening in May 2018 with 42 guestrooms has reached an occupancy rate of up to 65%. The guestrooms are 52 sq. m. and upwards, and the suites are 79 sq.m. The number of guestrooms is planned to reach 142 in the future.

The purpose of the project was to convert the historic landmark building of a former publishing house originally built in 1930s into an upscale, design hotel. The property’s initial façade was preserved while the rediscovered and restored printing equipment has added to the chic brutalist decor of the hotel.

Stamba features a ‘jungle lobby’ with a 5-storey high atrium dominated by a variety of trees and crowned with a glass bottomed rooftop swimming pool overlooking the city. Greenery plays a key role indoors as well as out, with a wide range of trees and flowers planted throughout the hotel’s public spaces, while natural light reaches down into the lobby through the transparent swimming pool which is yet another element of the hotel’s unique construction.

The creative outdoor terrace looks on to the hotel's gardens, a vast quadrangle also used as an Amphitheatre and outdoor exhibition space. Stamba displays an extensive collection of art work from contemporary Georgian artists, while up to 80,000 books of international literature are presented on extensive bookcases throughout the hotel’s public spaces as well as in guestrooms, further emphasizing the past heritage of the establishment.

The project development was made more practical as it was pursued in-house. Adjara Arch Group is well experienced in turning historic brutalist structures into stylish, contemporary properties. Temur Ugulava the entrepreneur and owner of Adjara Group, also a natural trend-setter and visionary, was personally involved in the development process from construction phase to interior design elements. It is a harmonious and well-structured process between the company, the owner and Adjara Arch Group.

Sharing the same building complex as its sister property Rooms Hotel Tbilisi visitors can enjoy features, services and amenities of both establishments creating a greater guest experience. The unique concept, building originality and design offer visitors the best of Georgian hospitality. Stamba hotel represents a juxtaposition of industrial minimalism and luxury avant-gardism. It is a mirror image of modern day Georgia interlaced with tradition and history.

The conversion of the former publishing house was a complex and a challenging project and included the repair, restoration and strengthening of the existing structure. A major challenge was the functional transition of the building: to turn a former publishing house into a new luxury hotel which would meet international requirements of a five-star hotel in terms of quality standards, architectural decisions and interior design choices, while preserving much of its historic heritage. The main architectural elements were restored including the façade. The preserved concrete walls, high warehouse windows and ceilings emphasize the brutalist nature of the original structure.

In addition, some of the salvaged printing equipment such as the newspaper conveyor belt, typing and printing machines were restored and displayed as part of the interior design, which further emphasizes the former nature of the building.

Stamba Hotel was created following the same construction principle as the most inspiring, historic buildings. The company does not follow the typical construction frames of pre-determined renders, but chooses to make creative decisions gradually. Thus, Stamba does not resemble a copied image of an already existing plan and is instead organic, authentic and full of life.

Stamba is an example of the group’s commitment to clean energy consumption since for the first time in Georgia a hotel is using electricity as its sole source of energy as opposed to the gas supply. It may be costlier financially, but the company is committed to avoiding the capital’s further pollution and chooses environmentally friendly solutions.
