Modern Renovation of a Seaside House

Interior architect Aet Piel refurbished and modernized a private house by the sea close to Tallinn, Estonia.

The purpose of the renovation was to create a more functional living-dining-entrance space. The area on the first floor is not very big, but the space runs through two floors. This demanded bold forms of furniture that attain the unity, architectural function and aesthetics. Dark grey tones and clean shapes have created a solid look blending the kitchen and living room together.

The previously small kitchen has now been enlarged towards the entrance with the dining table towards the end of a kitchen island. The new open-plan kitchen is further illuminated with a new window at the end of a kitchen tunnel. A long kitchen island contains an integrated hood, cooker and a sink. The clever design of pocket door solutions inside the tall furniture units adds extra workspace for smaller appliances giving the area even more light and spaciousness. Leading towards the entrance, the kitchen cabinets are combined with an entrance wardrobe on the other side of the wall. All the cabinetry is specifically built and designed for this particular project.

In the living room lies a four meter long TV unit, that, like all other wood surfaces, is finished with oil-wax. The grey colors are brought to the room with a couch by Rolf Benz, asymmetrical carpet by Ligne Roset and a classic Thonet 808 armchair. The large-scale light hanging from the second floor ceiling emphasizes the volume of this wonderful open space. Renovation also reached the second floor, where a multifunctional room was created for reading, working and sports activities.
