L’edificio appare da subito estraneo alle circostanti case in stile parigino; imponente, ma anche semplicissimo, un pò cubista e "appariscente", vuole evocare i ricordi felici legati ai giocattoli di un bambino. Un edificio progettato per le celebrazioni festive e per giovani. Con l’allegria e l’anticonformismo della sua facciata, l'edificio è in forte contrasto con la zona di sviluppo urbano in cui si trova, con il nuovo blocco di appartamenti privati, gli uffici e un asilo nido in stile neo-Haussmanniano. Il Centro deve la sua esistenza al Comune di Saint-Cloud che ha voluto strutture che rivitalizzassero la sua immagine e l’aprissero allo stile architettonico contemporaneo.

KOZ architectes ha dovuto far fronte al problema della coesistenza di due attività autonome in un’unica stretta lingua di terra. Ha così optato per estrudere l'area disponibile fino alla massima altezza, fornendo luce naturale all'interno del blocco e per sovrapporre le due attività senza isolarle, creando collegamenti visivi tra esse e applicando gli stessi principi a tutte le facciate e a tutti gli spazi, che, pur funzionalmente e amministrativamente autonomi, appaiono sovrapposti senza essere separati. Essi comunicano tramite scorci visivi facendo in modo che si “veda” e si “senta” l'altro.

L'edificio è caratterizzato da colori molto vivaci e determinati, con una tavolozza che varia dal rosso al verde, giallo, rosa e arancio. Questi colori rivestono la facciata con fasce larghe. All'interno, gli stessi colori sono sistematicamente ripetuti, come se si entrasse in un graffito di grandi dimensioni. Una sorta di “codice colore” che aiuta a riconoscere dall’esterno le zone interne, un mezzo di orientamento spaziale per i bambini più piccoli.

Al di là della pura funzionalità delle attività individuate nel progetto, gli architetti hanno anche posto grande fiducia nell'immaginazione e nell'inventiva degli occupanti. È per questo che tutti i corridoi, le rampe di accesso e di passaggio sono ampie e spaziose, fino a 3 volte la dimensione stabilita dal regolamento. La rampa che conduce alla zona giochi all’aperto e all’area per l’allenamento è stata progettata sullo stesso percorso. Grazie alla sua eccezionale ampiezza, prevede un "ulteriore" spazio e contribuisce in modo sicuro alla forte continuità fisica e visiva tra aree interne ed esterne del Centro progettato con l'obiettivo di renderlo utilizzabile per le attività che vanno dal semplice correre su e giù fino a quelle teatrali di piccole dimensioni da svolgersi all'aperto. Senza gradini e circondato da una ringhiera di 1,80 m, tutto il Centro è una zona sicura e privata dove i bambini possono andare in giro da soli in completa sicurezza.

L'edificio è una sovrapposizione verticale di spazi per attività varie come palestra, pareti di arrampicata, etc. , avvolto in un nastro di cemento che fornisce unitarietà all’insieme. Questo materiale è stato scelto dai progettisti poiché mette in evidenza l'aspetto scultoreo dell'edificio e soddisfa i requisiti di sovrapposizione di grandi spazi e isolamento acustico tra le due componenti del progetto che è sostanzialmente costituito da pannelli portanti prefabbricati in calcestruzzo. Il cemento armato stampato e colorato contrasta con il colore delle superfici dei pannelli laminati. La facciata principale è realizzata in vetro colorato con sfumatura di colore dal rosso al verde, le altre tre sono più omogenee, anche se ugualmente colorate.

L’attenzione all’ambiente di KOZ è stata applicata nella scelta delle aperture nei tetti e delle facciate vetrate - che fornendo la massima illuminazione naturale ovunque limitano il consumo elettrico - nell’uso del vetro colorato che assicura una buona protezione contro il sole e una lunga durata del colore stesso e nell’utilizzo di pannelli solari per la produzione di acqua calda sanitaria.


Nonconformist and bold
This building is not lacking in selfconfidence. As proof, you only have to take the second left along the Avenue de Longchamps from the Les Côteaux tramway Station in Saint-Cloud. No sooner have you left behind a quiet row of smart private houses in the traditional millstone grit Parisian style with front steps and plane trees than you come face to face with an odd-looking building, imposing but also childishly simple, more cubist than cube-shaped, decidedly “flashy”, evoking happy memories of a child’s toy. An appealing, totemic building that you sense is designed for festive celebrations and young people, and that you might expect to find in Rotterdam rather than the uber bourgeaois St Cloud neighbourhoods. Even if it is only 300 meters away from OMA’s Villa Dalll’Ava. With its cheerfulness and nonconformism, the building contrasts strongly with the urban development zone in which it’s located, behind a new block of private apartments and next to neo-Haussmannian offices and a day-nursery in a similar style. It is with the facing 1930s infant school that it empathises, extending the metaphor of the balcony courtyard, the passageways, the brick colour and the forecourt. As for the 1970s infant school next door, it maintains an obvious affinity with it in terms of shapes, only to dynamite the whole lot. All in all it’s an odd little castle and cubist mountain, that owes its existence to the boldness of the Saint-Cloud Town Council, which has thereby acquired facilities that have revitalised its image and opened it to the most contemporary and positive architectural thinking.
Superimposed but not separated
This brief provided a real headache: how to accommodate two autonomous programs on a narrow plot of land. KOZ chose to:
• extrude the available area to the maximum height and hollow it out as with canyons that bring a clear and massive outdoor light deep inside the block.
• superimpose the two programs without isolating them, by creating visual links between activities and applying the same principles on all facades and in all spaces.
The spaces are superimposed without being separated. They communicate via visual glimpses: you see each other on all sides, you ‘feel’ each other, you can easily find your bearings in a building with a spatially fluid but unfamiliar layout. Nevertheless, the functional and administrative autonomy of the two activities (separate entrances and different operational timetables) is respected.
A PURE COLOUR SCHEME
The building uses colour very openly and assertively, with a wide palette ranging from red to green, by way of yellow, pink and orange. These colours cover the façade in wide stripes. Inside, the same colours are systematically repeated, like stepping in an oversized graffiti. A colour coding that helps you locate from the outside the areas created on the inside. A means of spatial orientation for young children. An echo to street culture codes for those who crawl on what is dubbed the coolest indoor climbing wall in France,or practice on the pop fencing rows below!
Spaces to be filled
Over and above the pure functionality of the activities identified in the project, the architects placed great hope on the imagination and inventiveness of the occupants. That’s why all corridors, access ramps and passageways, are wide and spacious, up to 3 times the regulation size. The ramp leading to the outdoor games and training area has been designed along the same lines. Due to its exceptional width, it provides an “additional” space and safely contributes to the strong physical and visual continuity between the Leisure Centre’s internal and external areas. Indeed, it was designed with the aim of making it useable for activities ranging from just running up and down to becoming a small sized outdoor theatre . With no steps and surrounded by a 1.80m railing, it is a secure and private area where children can go alone in complete safety.
A concrete ribbon
The building is a vertical pilling of activity spaces (gymnasium, climbing walls, leisure centre, outdoor area) wrapped in a ribbon of concrete providing unity to the whole . Concrete was the natural choice as it highlights the building’s sculptural appearance while satisfying the requirements of:
• superimposing of large rooms atop the gymnasium with little load bearing possibilities
• acoustic insulation between the two components of the project.
The project is broadly made up of prefabricated concrete load-bearing panels. The moulded and tinted reinforced concrete contrasts with the coloured surfaces of the laminated panels.
Coloured facades
The main facade is made of tinted glass with a color gradient from red to green. The other 3 facades are more homogeneous, albeit coloured too.
A sustainable project
KOZ is part of the “environmentally aware” generation. The openings in the roofs and the glass facades bring maximum natural lighting everywhere to limit electrical consumption. Concrete was chosen for the reasons mentioned above but the preference was for prefabricated concrete, generating less waste and spill. The tinted glass facades provide good protection against setting sun and long-lasting colour. And of course all hot water is solar heated.
