La Binocle | naturehumaine [architecture+design]

Perched on a mountain in the Eastern Townships, the Crowhill cabin is based on its timelessness and minimalism concept. By its angular shape, the project aims to underline the beauty of the surrounding landscape.

The project takes advantage of the rocky cape to anchor its raw concrete foundations, on which rest two volumes advancing towards the treetops.
The first module contains the living areas while the second has two bedrooms. By accompanying the natural slope of the ground, their sloping roofs reinforce the sensation of sliding over the cliff. The entrance forms an in-between space between the modules that are oriented differently from each other’s.
The overhanging roofs on the south facade emphasize the view while limiting solar gain during the hot season. On the side, a wooden platform located in continuation of the kitchen is oriented west towards the sunset. The burnt wood use on the facades and the pre-woven hemlock planks result in a natural palette for the exterior envelope.
Inside, the panoramic view becomes the focal point of the living spaces and of the master bedroom. On the floor, the ceramic with a concrete finish unites all the spaces and reminds the natural finish of the foundations.

While enhancing the landscape, the project above all considers the cabin as a minimal and contemplative space, inviting tranquility.

Perché sur un flan de montagne des Cantons de l’Est, le concept du chalet Crowhill repose sur son intemporalité et son minimalisme. Par sa forme angulaire, le projet vise avant tout à souligner la beauté du paysage dans lequel il s’installe.

Le projet profite du cap rocheux pour ancrer ses fondations de béton brut, sur lesquelles reposent deux volumes en bord de falaise s’avançant vers la cime des arbres. Le premier module contient les espaces de vie alors que le second accueille deux chambres à coucher. En accompagnant la dénivellation naturelle du terrain, leurs toits en pente renforcent la sensation de glissement au-dessus de la falaise. Entre les deux, le vestibule d’entrée forme un pont suspendu à la rencontre des unités indépendantes, celles-ci orientées à angle l’une par rapport à l’autre.
En prolongeant les toitures au-delà des fenêtres orientées Sud, l’avancée souligne ainsi la vue tout en limitant les apports solaires durant la saison chaude. Au latéral, une plateforme de bois située en prolongement de la cuisine s’oriente à l’ouest vers le coucher de soleil. Le revêtement de bois brulé non traité et les planches de pruches préveillies composent une palette de matériaux naturels et participent à la simplicité formelle de l’enveloppe.
À l’intérieur, la vue panoramique devient le point focal des espaces de vie et de la chambre des maîtres. Au sol, un plancher de céramique fini béton unit l’ensemble des pièces et rappelle la finition naturelle des fondations extérieures.

Tout en valorisant le paysage, le projet se distingue ainsi par des lignes franches. Il envisage avant tout le chalet comme un espace minimal et contemplatif, invitant à la quiétude.
