383 Sorauren | Johnson Chou

383 Sorauren is a ten-storey condominium located in the heart of Roncesvalles, a neighbourhood known for its industrial roots. The building, designed by Peter Clewes of architectsAlliance, is filled with all the modern amenities to fit an urban lifestyle, including a modern fitness centre, outdoor lounge for entertaining, and a guest suite for family and friends. For the design of the amenities and suites a more functional, purposeful and studio-like narrative was envisioned.

The interiors are inspired by and designed to evoke the neighbourhood’s rich industrial heritage and its emergence as an art and design district. The idea was to seamlessly blend the textures and materials associated with its historical past against a backdrop of contemporary modern aesthetic and lifestyle.    

The use of raw, unadorned materials such as oil-finished wood and hot-rolled stainless steel - found in the public areas and the residential suites - define and reinterpret the industrial roots of the project’s context.

Subtle, simple, yet effective components can be found in the details of the space.  For example, kitchens have integrated wood recesses to facilitate access to frequently used tableware or for the display of decorative pieces.  A stainless steel backsplash is folded horizontally to function as an additional shelf.  Some units have bedrooms that open up completely, that can be integrated into the living area or can function as a home office.
